SAN JOSE — A pedestrian died on a South Bay freeway early Friday after walking in front of a vehicle and were struck, the California Highway Patrol said.
The collision happened about 4:55 a.m. on northbound Interstate 280 just south of state Highway 17.
According to the CHP, a man walked into the far left lane of I-280, into the path of a Toyota Corolla. The left front of the Toyota Corolla hit him, the CHP said.
The man ended up down in the HOV lane and died at the scene.
The man was identified as Mike Ellis Scheck, 80, according to the Santa Clara County coroner’s office.
The Toyota driver remained at the scene and spoke with the CHP. He wasn’t injured, and the CHP said drugs and alcohol were not a factor.
The CHP closed the far left two lanes of the freeway to investigate. They said traffic was not affected minimally, because the morning commute hadn’t begun. All lanes were back open by 7 a.m.
