Resident of Los Gatos

Shirley Burke passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve morning. She was a loving wife to Ed Burke, a devoted mother to Anne Burke Martyn and Claire Burke Whitehead, and a proud grandmother to Peter Martyn, Ryan Martyn, and Emma Whitehead. Shirley was known for her steady support and encouragement, always present for those she cared about.

Born and raised in Santa Clara, California, Shirley graduated from Santa Clara High School, where she was a CSF scholar and recognized as "Best All-Around" in her senior class.

Shirley and Ed's 64-year marriage began while they were students at San Jose State University. She went on to coach Ed in the hammer throw through three Olympiads, a role that was both personal and professional. Together, they were co-owners of the Los Gatos Athletic Club, which served as a gathering place for the community for 25 years.

In addition to her work and family life, Shirley was an artist and a dedicated volunteer. She enjoyed spending time at the Friends of the Los Gatos Library Bookstore and was an active member of PEO, an organization focused on women's education.

Shirley will be remembered for her quiet strength, her kindness, and her commitment to her family and community.

She will be missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Friends of the Los Gatos Library or a charity of your choice in her memory.
