Banff film and book festival returns

After a two-year hiatus, the fall screening of the Banff Centre Mountain Film Festival World Tour Adventure Night is back with all new films 7-10 p.m. Oct. 12 at the Rio Theatre, 1205 Soquel Ave., Santa Cruz.

Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival is one of the largest and most prestigious mountain festivals in the world. Vintage Volkswagen Car Show comes to wharf

About 200 vintage Volkswagens will invade the Santa Cruz Wharf Saturday to support local nonprofits such as the Veteran Surf Alliance and Second Harvest Food Bank. The event is organized by the vintage Volkswagen social club called VDUBlicious and will feature music, raffles and awards. The Wharf Invasion is free and will take place on the Santa Cruz Wharf from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Senior center to host Fall Garden & Craft Fair

The Fall Garden & Craft Fair is coming to the Mid-County Senior Center, 829 Bay Ave., Capitola, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The craft artisan sale will include bounties from the garden, free garden tours, art fun for kids and a scarecrow building. Barbecue and snacks will be available for purchase.

Benefit dance concert at Senior Center

The Mid-County Senior Center will be hosting a benefit dance and concert featuring the Country Feeling Band from 7-9 p.m. Friday at 829 Bay Ave., Capitola.

Tickets are $10 per person and everyone 18 and older is welcome to attend and participate in the dances. Shanta Shenoy will teach a country line dance class at 6 p.m. for no additional charge. Mid County Senior Center provides a variety of programs and activities for the local community.

Get documents shredded at HICAP event

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 5, bring any mail that contains personal information and have it shredded at 3333 Soquel Drive, Soquel. Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) will be on hand providing information on the upcoming Medicare annual enrollment period, and information on how to avoid Medicare fraud. UC Santa Cruz to host Harvest Festival

The 2024 Harvest Festival will feature live music, an apple pie bake-off, kids’ activities, pumpkins for sale, delicious food, and more 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 19, at the UCSC Farm, Farm Road, Santa Cruz.

Admission is $5, with free admission for kids under 12, UCSC, Hartnell College, and Cabrillo College students with a student ID, Semillas program families, and Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden members. Go to calendar.ucsc.edu/event/harvest-festival to preregister.

Bicycling, carpooling, ridesharing and public transportation are encouraged as parking is limited. If you drive to the event, plan to park in UCSC Lot No. 104 (East Remote parking lot) and walk or take a complimentary shuttle to the farm. There will be directional signage to help you get to the correct parking lot and farm entrances.

Bring a reusable water bottle to save plastic and stay hydrated. Pets are not allowed on the UC Santa Cruz campus (with the exception of service animals).

Capitola Soroptimist Club to meet Oct. 8

The Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea will hold its club meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday at United Way of Santa Cruz County, 4450 Capitola Road, Suite 106, Capitola.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

The club will be outlining its participation in the Sierra Pacific Region’s District I meeting, which it is co-hosting with Soroptimists of Watsonville on Oct. 26. A debriefing of the results of the ninth year operating the rental booth at the Santa Cruz Shakespeare festival, and the club’s Dinner for 6 raffle, currently underway, will also be discussed. Buyers can win one of three prizes — dinner for six at a private Santa Cruz residence, a sailboat cruise on Monterey Bay for four, and a $100 gift card for Shadowbrook Restaurant. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased by calling 831-239-8532. Only 35 tickets are being sold.

Soroptimist International of Capitola-by-the-Sea is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment. Soroptimist is a coined Latin phrase meaning Best for Women.
