TODAY’S GAMES

Northview (2-1) vs. Covina (3-0) at Covina District Field, 7 p.m.

Outlook: There is firepower everywhere for the local rivals. The Colts outlasted Diamond Bar 42-32 last week to stay undefeated. They got a huge game from quarterback Jake Duronslet, who threw for 179 yards and three TDs and ran for a score. Joseph Rangel rushed for 120 yards. The Vikings might be even more potent offensively with running backs Keanu Tauvau (350 yards, 6 TDs) and Angel Barraza (290 yards, 5 TDs) and QB Eric Jimenez, who is averaging 167 yards passing. Both teams have blowout wins over South Hills, but the Vikings won this game 42-12 last season. Maybe the Colts have the closed the gap, but that’s a big gap to close.

The pick: Northview

St. Margaret’s (1-2) at Muir (2-1), 7 p.m.

Outlook: There was panic after Muir’s season-opening loss to Northview, 41-6. But some key transfers became eligible the following week, and it rebounded with solid back-to-back wins over St. Pius X-St. Matthias 22-15 and Banning 20-15. This is more like the Mustangs defense that helped them win the CIF-SS Division 10 championship last year. It would help if their offense was playing better, but that should happen as they adjust to a more pass-oriented offense with QB Brandon Valencia and their talented receivers. St. Margaret’s will be Muir’s toughest opponent since Northview. It played Ontario Christian well before losing 41-35. Muir can win, but its offense needs to show up.

The pick: Muir

Crescenta Valley (1-1) at San Marino (3-0), 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Titans have beaten three opponents with a combined record of 1-8, but they looked dominant while doing it. They remained undefeated with a 42-6 win over Rosemead last week and continued to get solid quarterback play from junior Brady Beck, who is averaging 268 yards passing per game and has nine touchdowns. Running back Coleman Morning is rushing for nearly 100 yards per game and has four TDs. The defense is solid. Liam Van Fossan already has four sacks. Crescenta Valley was handled fairly easily by West Covina 24-7 last week, so this looks like an opportunity for the Titans to make it four straight wins.

The pick: San Marino

Damien (3-0) at Mira Costa (0-2), 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Spartans are rolling and will be hoping to start 4-0 for the first time since 2002. They’re ranked No. 22 in CalPreps’ CIF Southern Section rankings to lead all San Gabriel Valley teams. The Spartans are feeling good after returning from Hawaii, where they beat another team named Damien 59-29. Spartans wideout Ayden Gutierrez has 18 receptions for 283 yards and Elijah Bechtel and Raul Dorantes IV each have eight receptions. The Spartans’ schedule isn’t as loaded as it was the previous two years, but it’s still a solid schedule and they’re handling it well. Mira Costa is 0-2 after losing to St. Francis 34-21 and Mayfair 44-35. Damien should win, but its defense will be tested.

The pick: Damien.

La Cañada (2-1) at Burroughs of Burbank (3-0), 7 p.m.

Outlook: This game was agreed to Wednesday after La Cañada’s home game against Santa Paula this week was canceled due to COVID-related issues for Santa Paula’s football team. Burroughs also had an opponent cancel due to concerns about a team’s depth due to injuries. It’s a good matchup. The Spartans are coming off a loss last week to Cantwell Sacred Heart 14-9. Spartans QB Macky Plocker was solid in their first two wins, but held to just 45 yards passing last week while the running game was held under 100 yards. The Indians have allowed only 17 points through three games and look like the Pacific League favorites, but the Spartans will be their toughest test.

The pick: Burroughs

El Rancho (2-1) at Montebello (1-2), 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Dons hope to get back on track after last week’s 43-13 loss to Monrovia. The loss wasn’t a big surprise, but the final outcome was, especially considering how well the Dons played in wins over Don Lugo and Bell Gardens. The Dons rushed for only 150 yards last week. They hope to get their running game going against a Montebello squad that lost a tough one to South El Monte 23-22 last week. The Oilers opened the season with a huge comeback win over Baldwin Park. The Dons might jump on them early and be too physical.

The pick: El Rancho

La Serna (1-2) at Tesoro (2-1), 7 p.m.

Outlook: After playing Los Alamitos tough for three quarters in a 25-6 loss, the Lancers lost their second straight to Warren 39-21 last week. Lancers RB Owen Long was held to 71 yards and a TD, but the bigger concern was the points they allowed. That’s something they hope to clean up against Tesoro. The Titans are a strong opponent from the South Coast League and beat last year’s CIF-SS Division 3 champion Yorba Linda 12-7 last week. Their loss was a 17-14 setback to Newport Harbor, which is the most points they have allowed this season. Scoring might be difficult for the Lancers and deep in Orange County, it will be hard to come home with a win.

The pick: Tesoro

SATURDAY’S GAMES

San Dimas (2-1) vs. Bonita (3-0) at Citrus College, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The annual Smudge Pot game has been a competitive rivalry over the years. Bonita owns a 26-24-1 edge in the series and has won the last four, including 21-13 last year. It’s hard to imagine much will change with how well the Bearcats played their first three games, especially on offense. Freshman quarterback Daniel Mielke is averaging 223 yards passing and has five touchdowns. Bonita is rushing for 250 yards per game with Jayden Montenegro and Noah Mikhail providing most of the damage. The Saints have been in three close games and could be 3-0 or 0-3. They beat Marina in overtime, 21-15, last week, behind a big game from Brian Jackson. They beat Fullerton 14-12 in their season opener and lost to Lakewood 14-7. It seems points are too hard to come by for San Dimas, and that’s a recipe for disaster against Bonita.

The pick: Bonita

West Covina (2-1) vs. South Hills (1-2) at Covina District Field, 7 p.m.

Outlook: The Kings of Cameron rivalry is two decades strong and one of the most attended rivalries in the San Gabriel Valley. The Bulldogs have won three straight in the series and have bullied the Huskies in their past two meetings, winning 26-0 in 2021 and 42-0 last year. The Huskies started the season with a rout of Nogales, but were hammered the past two weeks by Covina and Northview, respectively. Don’t count the Huskies out. Senior RB Gary San Angelo is trying to find his form after offseason surgery. He carried the ball 10 times for 51 yards last week and could be ready for a breakout performance. The Bulldogs bounced back after a disappointing loss to Los Altos with a 24-7 win over Crescenta Valley. The Bulldogs might appear to have an edge over the Huskies after the past two years, but we like the Huskies in the upset of the weekend.

The pick: South Hills
