Sarah Farese scored her fifth goal in four MCAL games to lift the Redwood High girls soccer team to a 1-0 win against Marin Catholic on Wednesday.
Farese’s goal came in the 77th minute, assisted by Caitlin Titcombe. The result lifted the Giants (9-2-3, 3-0-1 MCAL) into a first-place tie with Tam, which defeated Branson 2-0 in the other big game on Tuesday.
The loss dropped MC (8-3-2, 3-1-0) into third place, one point behind the league leaders.
• Hana Leach scored just before the half and Addie Covey got the second late in the second half as Tam secured a 2-0 victory against Branson (12-2-1, 2-1-1). Covey assisted on the first goal for the Red-tailed Hawks (8-3-5, 3-0-1) and Lauren Willard assisted on the second goal.
• Mari Rode scored the only goal of the game as Archie Williams (3-4-3, 1-2-0) secured its first points of the season with a 1-0 victory against Terra Linda (5-4-3, 1-2-1) on Tuesday.
Prep wrestling
San Marin won three of the five contested matches as the Mustangs beat San Rafael, 52-11, on Wednesday in Mill Valley as part of a dual meet event with Tam High. San Marin’s Jackson Young (217) and Supasin Wongkhum (287) both pinned their opponents, while the Mustangs’ Tristan Lloyd (177) won a 13-2 decision over Anthony Mena. The Bulldogs’ Nico Mack (128) pinned Sebastian McLean, and Rio Johnson (146) beat Levi Manville.
Cheerleading
San Rafael won the Small Varsity Coed Non-tunbling title at the inaugural North Coast Section Traditional Competitive Cheerleading Championships on Jan. 18.
Women’s basketball
Marin Catholic grad Gracyn Lovette scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds in Lehigh’s 61-55 Patriot League victory over American on Wednesday.
College athletics
Sonoma State University announced Wednesday that is eliminating its athletics programs beginning in the 2025-26 academic year as part of measures to close its projected $23.9 million budget deficit. Sonoma State currently offers 11 NCAA Division II programs.
SSU Interim President Emily F. Cutrer announced Wednesday, “We also have made the decision to eliminate NCAA Division II athletics. Our Athletic Director is informing our student athletes and coaching staffs of this decision today. We are wholly committed to working with every impacted student athlete to ensure they are aware of their options as they consider whether to remain at Sonoma State or to transfer to another institution. Student athletes who choose to remain at SSU will remain eligible to receive scholarships, as long as they meet the current terms of the scholarship. We will also support and assist those who wish to transfer in order to continue participation in intercollegiate athletics.”
