




Senior guard Mosiah Cumberbatch scored a season-high 19 points, and Santa Cruz High’s boys basketball team needed everyone of them to knock off relentless Soquel 58-54 in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League overtime thriller in Santa Cruz on Friday night.
“Mosiah carried the team tonight,” Cardinals coach Lawan Milhouse said.
The Cardinals led by eight points with two minutes remaining, but the Knights rallied and evened up the score at 50-all by the end of regulation.
Senior Guerande Houssin, a transfer from Harbor, made two layups in the extra stanza.
“It was a good game,” Milhouse said. “We have to get better at closing out games still. We were up eight points with two minutes to go and didn’t close the door. As a group, we have to do better down the stretch. But, hats off to Soquel. They didn’t lay down and quit. Soquel of past years would have. They kept fighting. We made the right plays to squeeze out the ‘W.’ Good game to get a win. It wasn’t pretty, but we will take it.”
Junior forward DeMarco Hunter had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Cardinals (7-8, 2-0).
Sophomore Kaden Mirtz had nine points and six rebounds for Santa Cruz. Cumberbatch also had five assists and four rebounds.
Soquel (8-8, 1-1) made eight 3-pointers. Senior Nolen Westfall led the way with 23 points, and senior guard Nico Ramirez scored 15 points.
Santa Cruz hosts University (11-7) of San Francisco on Monday at 2:15 p.m.
Soquel hosts Aptos (12-4, 2-0) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Aptos 59, at SLV 39 >> Isaiah Ackerman had 17 points six steals and six assists in less than two quarters of play, and the Mariners rolled to the SCCAL win Friday.
Aptos led 30-8 at the end of the first quarter and 48-20 at halftime. The teams played with a running clock for the entire second half.
Senior center Owen Warmerdam had two dunks and scored nine points for the Mariners (12-4, 2-0).
Freshman Caleb Cox scored 13 points to lead SLV (4-10, 0-2).
On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Aptos plays at Soquel (8-8, 1-1), while SLV plays at Harbor (5-10, 0-2).
At Scotts Valley 79, Harbor 48 >> Senior center Jacob Sanders and senior guard Taylor Knox each scored 18 points in the Falcons’ SCCAL win Friday.
Senior guard Will Shilling and junior guard Caden Kilpatrick each scored 10 points for the Falcons (7-9, 1-1), who took the early lead and never looked back.
“The ball really moved today,” Falcons coach Gabe Gonzales said. “We are a tough team to beat if we move the ball like that.”
Senior guard Miles Dix lead Harbor (5-10, 0-2) with 15 points, and sophomore guard Malik Wooden scored 11 points.
“I’m proud of how hard the kids played,” Pirates coach Craig Wooden said. “Young mistakes and missed scoring opportunities, but they are learning and growing. I’m proud of them.”
On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Falcons play at Santa Cruz (7-8, 2-0), while Harbor hosts SLV (4-10, 0-2).
Pajaro Valley 73, at Trinity Christian 37 >> Carlos Escobar scored 24 points, and the Grizzlies won their Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division game Friday.
Adrian Valadez scored 12 points for the Grizzlies (5-8, 4-1), and Evan Mendez scored eight points.
Eli Robertson made two 3s and scored 31 points for the Warriors.
Pajaro Valley hosts Monterey Bay Academy on Thursday at 5 p.m.
At Marina 70, MVC 63 >> Jerry Arceo Jr. made five 3-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points in the Mustangs’ PCAL Mission Division loss Friday.
Nico Downie and Matteo Vidal each scored 13 points for the Mustangs (6-7, 0-4), who trailed 42-32 at the half.
The teams shot a combined 54 free throws.
Kaleb True made 10 free throws and finished with a game-high 20 points for the Mariners (6-10, 1-4). Nathaniel Kombe made seven free throws and scored 15 points.
MVC plays at Hollister (7-5, 3-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Girls basketball
At Santa Cruz 42, Soquel 27 >> Junior Karolina Espinosa had 19 points and 15 rebounds in the Cardinals’ SCCAL win Friday. She also made three steals, two assists, and two blocks.
Nadia Delgadillo scored all seven of her points in the first half, which helped the Cardinals (7-8, 2-0) jump out to a 23-13 lead.
Brooke Alden had three points and seven rebounds. Mila Conn had four points, four steals, two rebounds, and two steals.
Senior Maddison Barwick made three 3s and scored 11 points to lead the Knights (3-6, 1-1), who host Aptos (9-7, 1-1) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Santa Cruz plays hosts Scotts Valley (12-2, 2-0) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m..
Aptos 50, at SLV 27 >> Senior Berkeley Ashby had 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals in 16 minutes, and the Mariners sailed to the SCCAL win Friday.
Aptos’ Eliya Chavez hit three 3-pointers for nine points, and junior Abby Sherwood had nine points and six rebounds.
On Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., Aptos (9-7, 1-1) plays at Soquel, while SLV (8-7, 0-2) plays at Harbor.
At Scotts Valley 58, Harbor 11 >> Junior guard Sammy Rebbert made two 3-pointers and scored a game-high 16 points for the Falcons in their SCCAL win Friday.
Junior guard Brooklyn Williams also made two 3s and scored 15 points for the Falcons (12-2, 2-0), who led 36-7 at the half. Senior center Claire Skinner had 10 points.
Liz Locatelli scored five points for the Pirates (1-10, 0-2), who host SLV on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Scotts Valley plays at Santa Cruz (7-8, 2-0) on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Men’s volleyball
Cal Lutheran 3, at UC Santa Cruz 1 >> Dylan Foreman had 21 kills and three blocks, but the Banana Slugs lost 25-27, 27-23, 25-19, 28-26 in their hard-fought match on Day 2 of the Slugfest at the West Field House on Friday.
Riley Norman had 14 kills and 10 digs for UCSC (4-2). Kyle Ownbey had nine kills and four blocks. Logan Taylor made 24 assists, and Andrew Pak made 21 assists.
Michael Stahl had 19 kills and10 digs to pace the Kingsmen (3-1).
UCSC hosts Carthage (3-0) of Kenosha, Wisconsin, at the West Field House on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Boys soccer
At St. Francis 3, Anzar 3 >> Evan Salguero, Colton Stevens and Aidan Berrelleza scored for the Sharks in their PCAL Santa Lucia Division game Friday.
Vince Tovar shined of defense, coach Valentin Berrelleza said.
Stevens also played goalie for a bit and made two saves for the Sharks (0-5-1-, 0-1-1), who play at York (0-2-1, 0-2-1) in Monterey on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
