The Giants will be without Gold Glove third baseman Matt Chapman for their six-game National League West trip against the Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers that began Tuesday night in Denver.

Chapman, the Giants’ best position player, was placed on the 10-day injured list with right hand inflammation, the team announced Tuesday morning. He will see Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Friday, and the team will provide an update following that appointment.

Infielder Christian Koss was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento.

Chapman, 32, injured his hand Sunday while sliding back to first base during the Giants’ 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves. This is the first time Chapman, who played 154 games in his first year with San Francisco, has landed on the injured list since August 2023 with the Toronto Blue Jays. An x-ray taken Sunday ruled out any broken bones, but Chapman told reporters he might have damaged ligaments in three fingers on his right hand.

The Giants entered Tuesday having won five straight games since Buster Posey shook up the team’s roster, but the offense has remained subpar. During this five-game winning streak, the Giants have scored 21 runs while posting a .200 batting average and .583 OPS.

Now, they’ll be tasked with keeping their winning streak alive — and heading into this weekend’s series against the Dodgers — without one of the hotter bats. Since May, Chapman is hitting .282/.364/.516 with seven home runs and 14 RBIs. He hit a walk-off two-run home run to beat the Braves 3-2 on Saturday.

In Chapman’s absence, manager Bob Melvin started Casey Schmitt at third base and inserted Jung Hoo Lee into the leadoff spot, the first time that Lee has hit leadoff this season. Melvin also has shortstop Willy Adames, who received his first scheduled off day of the season on Sunday, batting second, his first time batting in that spot since May 11.

Schmitt, 26, stands to hold down the hot corner for the time being. He’s been an above-average defender at third base during his major league career, totaling three defensive runs saved and three outs above average. This season, Schmitt has a .180 batting average and .521 OPS over 20 games.

Koss has a .541 OPS with one home run and eight RBIs over 29 games for the Giants this season but has rated out an excellent defender (four defensive runs saved). He was optioned last Wednesday as part of the roster shakeup and played two games with Sacramento before being recalled.

INJURY REPORT

Justin Verlander (right pectoral soreness) is scheduled to throw his second live bullpen on Wednesday at Coors Field after throwing a live bullpen on Friday at Oracle Park.

Additionally, Jordan Hicks (right great toe inflammation) was scheduled to throw a bullpen on Tuesday at Coors Field.

Verlander, 42, was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 22 (retroactive to May 19). The future Hall of Famer is winless over 10 starts, posting a 4.33 ERA with 41 strikeouts over 52 innings.

Left-hander Kyle Harrison replaced Verlander in the rotation and has allowed seven runs over 13 1/3 innings (4.73 ERA) in three starts. Harrison pitched well against the Washington Nationals (four innings, two runs) and Miami Marlins (five innings, no runs) but allowed five runs to the San Diego Padres.

Hicks, 28, sustained his injury on June 1 in Miami against the Marlins and was placed on the injured list on June 3 (retroactive to June 2). The right-hander began the season in the rotation but was moved to the bullpen in mid-May. In four appearances as a reliever. Hicks has allowed two runs over 3 1/3 innings with more walks (4) than strikeouts (2).
