




James Logan basketball player Iwa Lealao is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week, and Alhambra basketball player Samuel Gillaspy is the boys athlete of the week for Dec. 9-14.
In online voting that ended at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Lealao finished with 45.05% of the votes. Leigh basketball player Ashley Saban was second and Silver Creek soccer player Natalia Niebles was third.
In the boys poll, Gillaspy had 41.94% of the votes to finish ahead of Mountain View boys basketball player Jayden Minor, who finished second. Archbishop Riordan boys basketball player Jasir Rencher was third.
Gillaspy, in four games during the week, averaged 19.75 points and four 3-pointers. Alhambra went 3-1, including wins over Irvington and Arroyo to capture the Arroyo tournament title. Gillaspy received tournament MVP recognition.
Lealao, a sharpshooting point guard, scored 17 points and made five 3-pointers in a 54-44 victory over Washington. She finished the week averaging 15.5 points per game.
The Athlete of the Week poll is taking a two-week break for the holidays. The next poll will be on Jan. 6.
