Miami’s playoff hopes took a potentially fatal nosedive while Alabama’s got a boost Tuesday night in the last rankings before the 12-team College Football Playoff bracket is set next weekend.
The Hurricanes (10-2) moved down six spots, to No. 12 — the first team out of the projected bracket after suffering their second loss of the season. They are one spot behind the Crimson Tide (9-3), who won last week and moved up two spots to No. 11, where they are projected as the last team in.
It was the strongest indication yet that the selection committee is looking at more than mere wins and losses, but also at strength of schedule and other factors that appear to give the SEC an edge.
Oregon stayed at No. 1 for the fifth straight week and will head into Saturday’s Big Ten title game as the only undefeated team in big-time college football.
The pairings for college football’s first 12-team playoff will be set Sunday, the day after the conference title games. The playoff games start Dec. 20, with the title game set for Jan. 20 in Atlanta.
Ohio State moved down four spots to No. 6 after its loss to Michigan.
That bumped Texas up a spot to No. 2, Penn State to No. 3, Notre Dame to No. 4 and Georgia to No. 5.

Stanford wide receiver Elic Ayomanor joined Cal punter Lachlan Wilson as second-team All-ACC choices. The Bears also had two third-team picks — defensive end Xavier Carlton and safety Craig Woodson — and four honorable mentions: tight end Jack Endries, linebacker Cade Uluave as well as Carlton (as a linebacker) and Williams as an all-purpose player.

Snell: Joining Dodgers ‘really easy’ decision >> Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell says it was a really easy decision to sign with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers and the presence of three-time MVP Shohei Ohtani played a part, too.
Snell, who turned 32 today, was introduced at Dodger Stadium accompanied by his agent Scott Boras. The left-hander finalized a $182 million, five-year contract last Saturday.
“It was really easy just cause me and Haeley wanted to live here, it’s something we’ve been talking about for a while,” Snell said, referring to his girlfriend. “It helps with (Ohtani) in the lineup for sure. That’s big motivation.”
Last month, Snell opted out of his deal with San Francisco to become a free agent for the second consecutive offseason after he was slowed by injuries during his lone year with the Giants, where he went 5-3 with a 3.12 ERA in 20 starts this season, throwing a no-hitter at Cincinnati on Aug. 2..
Red Sox agree with Chapman >> The Boston Red Sox have agreed to terms with left-handed reliever Aroldis Chapman on a one-year deal that would pay him $10.75 million, according to multiple reports.
Chapman gives the Red Sox a potential closer with incumbent Kenley Jansen on the free agent market.
Chapman, 36, has a 2.63 ERA with 1,246 strikeouts in his 15-season career with seven teams, and his 335 saves is 16th in baseball history.
