A record-setting performance helped Romeo’s girls track and field team complete a season sweep.

Violet Hrabovsky and Ella Goodsell won an open event apiece and ran on a relay team that set a meet record to lead the Bulldogs to the team championship at the Macomb County High School Invitational Track Meet of Champions on a misty and chilly Wednesday at Fraser.

Romeo won eight running events, including both hurdles races and the 400 meters, while piling up 130.5 points.

“Our distance girls carry us, and we’re doing really well in our sprints, too,” said Samantha Sackfield, who won the 400 and ran on two winning relay teams. “It’s such a good program. We all push each other to be our best. We just want to be really good.”

Sackfield’s 400 time was 58.36 seconds.

“It was a really good run,” the junior said. “I had to push it at the end. I had to kick it really hard, because there was a girl right next to me.”

This year was the first that Macomb Area Conference Red Division power Romeo went undefeated in dual meets and won conference-, regional- and county-meet crowns.

Olivia Purdy and Natalia Guaresimo teamed with Hrabovsky and Goodsell on the 4 by 800 relay that finished in 9:22.74 and broke the meet record of 9:35.81 set by Romeo in 2017.

Hrabovsky won the 800 in a personal-record 2:17.29 and Goodsell helped the Bulldogs finish 1-2-3 in the 1600 when she won in 5:03.91.

A second meet record fell as Fraser hosted the annual meet for the first time. Senior Megan Morell of Lake Shore pole vaulted 11 feet, 5 inches.

Morell finished second to Romeo’s Evelyn Goedge in the 300 hurdles. They had respective times of 47.47 and 47.95.

Romeo’s Avery Glugla won the 100 hurdles in 16.23 and Layla Babich gave the Bulldogs a field-events victory when she won the long jump at 17-1.5.

The same quartet gave Romeo first-place finishes in the 4 by 100 and 4 by 100 relays. Sydney Fabbri, Josie Finkbeiner, Goedge and Sackfield finished the shorter race in 49.54 and the longer in 1:44.51.

In the 1600, Romeo’s Annie Hrabovsky and Guaresimo finished second and third, respectively. Purdy was fifth.

South Lake won a pair of field events. Mahogany Pettaway threw the discus 109-2 and Dania McClain went 5-0 in the high jump. Pettaway also finished third in the shot put.

Charlotte Martin of Cousino won the shot put with a throw of 38-9.5 in the final round.

Martin, who had been using a “gliding” form to throw, went to a spinning method for the first time in competition.

“I’m very happy with how it turned out,” the junior said. “(The winning mark) was not bad, since it was a new technique, something I’m not used to yet. I’m very excited.”

Eisenhower’s Abigail Boyd was a double winner. The freshman won the 100 in 12.56 and the 200 in 26.08.

Siene Muraszewski of Utica won the 3200 in 11:18.64.

The Warren-Mott team of Ayana Pitts, Summer Richmond, Mackenzie Burzych and Leajah Ferguson won the 4 by 400 relay in 4:22.03.

Dakota finished second with 67.17 points. Fraser, Utica and Chippewa Valley completed the top five.

Medals were awarded to the top eight finishers in each event.
