The Broncos will be without a pair of key contributors Sunday against Kansas City and a quartet of foundational players are listed as questionable.
All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II (ankle) is off the injury report and cleared to play against the Chiefs, which is good news for Denver ahead of the showdown with the AFC West leaders.
Running back RJ Harvey will miss the game after sustaining a knee injury in Thursday’s practice, while safety Talanoa Hufanga is out for a third straight game with an ankle injury.
Denver is also listing defensive tackle Zach Allen (hamstring), wide receiver Jaylen Waddle (chest), left tackle Garett Bolles (hip), and safety Brandon Jones (hamstring) as questionable. All four were limited participants in practice Friday.
Harvey injury is not believed to be severe or hold him out long term, a source told The Post. He’s already been ruled out for the Chiefs’ game, but it’s an encouraging sign for the Broncos’ running back.
It is not immediately clear how much time he will miss or if he is a candidate for injured reserve. Denver typically places players on IR on Saturday before a game.
The Broncos play the Chiefs on Sunday, visit Carolina next weekend and then have their bye week, which means Harvey would likely have to be looking at more than a five-week recovery in order to be a sure-fire IR candidate.
With Harvey out Sunday and fellow running back Tyler Badie already on injured reserve with a thumb issue, the Broncos will rely heavily on rookie Jonah Coleman and veteran J.K. Dobbins in the backfield.
They are also likely to promote Cody Schrader from the practice squad and have at times used fullback Adam Prentice as a pass protector this year.
Running back playing time has already sparked plenty of conversation this week, with Dobbins pushing back on the notion that he may be ceding playing time to Coleman.
On Friday, head coach Sean Payton said Denver considers the length of the season and Dobbins’ health, at least in part, when deciding how much playing time each back gets each week.
“I mean, yeah, and I think one of the challenges sometimes with three backs is it’s much easier with two to get the balance, but man he’s doing well,” Payton said of Dobbins. “It’s a deep room. I like the way the’re playing in general. With him, his numbers have peaked. There’s certain times when you look at the analytical data we have now and you see burst and speed.
“We like the depth there.”
Coleman, for his part, said Friday that he’s ready for any role.
“I’m ready for any opportunity I’m given,” he said. “Whenever I’m out there, I’m going to give the team my all.”
Hufanga, meanwhile, was present at Denver’s practice Friday for the first time since he hurt his ankle Oct. 11 at the Los Angeles Chargers. He was listed as a non-participant, however. With Hufanga out and Jones questionable, the Broncos will elevate veteran Taylor Rapp for the third and final time from the practice squad unless he is promoted to the 53-man roster before Sunday.
He has filled in ably the past two weeks with Hufanga down.
Waddle and Allen were injured in the fourth quarter of last week’s win at Arizona while Jones dropped out of Thursday’s practice with the hamstring issue.
The fact that they and Bolles both practiced in a limited capacity over the past two days is a promising sign, though there is enough uncertainty about their game statuses to list them as questionable. Jones practicing one day after dropping out with a hamstring issue is also a positive sign.
Key Kansas City defenders on injury report
Kansas City’s list of players up in the air for Sunday isn’t as long as Denver’s, but several key defenders are either out or questionable.
Cornerback L’Jarius Sneed was ruled out by the team Friday with a knee injury while a pair of standout rookies in cornerback Mansoor Delane (shoulder) and edge rusher R Mason Thomas (personal) are questionable to play.
Delane practiced Wednesday but then was a DNP each of the past two days with a shoulder injury. He picked off Bo Nix on the first possession of Week 1 but then didn’t return due to a shoulder injury.
Thomas had a sack in the teams’ first matchup and has had a high-quality start to his rookie season.
The Chiefs’ top receiver, Rashee Rice, is cleared to play after missing the past two games with hamstring and knee issues.
