All-Star Game: Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodón and Royals closer Carlos Estévez on Friday were named replacements on the American League roster for the All-Star Game. Rodón, an All-Star for the third time in five seasons, will replace teammate Max Fried for Tuesday’s game in Atlanta. Fried will be unavailable because he is scheduled to start Saturday against the Cubs. Rodón is 9-6 with a 3.30 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 111 2/3 innings. He was scheduled to start against the Cubs on Friday night and would pitch on three days’ rest if he appears in the All-Star Game. Estévez replaces Texas’ Jacob deGrom, who is scheduled to start at Houston on Saturday night. DeGrom will travel to Atlanta and participate in All-Star activities. Estévez, a 2023 All-Star when he was with the Angels, has 25 saves and a 2.03 ERA in 39 appearances after signing with the Royals as a free agent in January. The Mariners announced center fielder Julio Rodríguez will not participate. He had been voted onto the AL roster via the players’ ballot. The Mariners said Rodriguez will use the All-Star break to “recuperate, rest and prepare for the second half.” Rodriguez is batting .244 with 11 home runs, 44 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

MLB: The Yankees’ Aaron Judge has moved into second behind the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani in Major League Baseball jersey sales heading into the All-Star break. Judge rose from fifth to second, Major League Baseball said Friday. He was followed by the Dodgers’ Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts. Judge and Ohtani also were the top vote-getters in the first round of fan balloting for starters in Tuesday’s All-Star Game, gaining the first two-roster spots. The Giants’ Rafael Devers, Red Sox’s Jarren Duran, Giants’ Jung Hoo Lee, Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong and Tigers’ Tarik Skubal entered the top 20 for the first time. Four Dodgers and three Mets were among the top 20. The Mets’ Francisco Lindor was fifth, followed by teammate Juan Soto. The Giatns’ Devers was seventh, followed by the Astros’ Jose Altuve, Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr. and Phillies’ Bryce Harper. The Braves’ Ronald Acuña Jr. was 11th, followed by Duran, Diamondbacks’ Corbin Carroll, Blue Jays’ Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Reds’ Elly De La Cruz, the Mets’ Pete Alonso, Lee, Crow-Armstrong, Skubal and the Dodgers’ Clayton Kershaw. MLB’s list included sales on Fanatics’ sites, including MLBShop.com, since opening day.

Astros: The Astros’ top prospect infielder Brice Matthews was called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to join the Astros for the start of their series against the Rangers Friday night. Matthews, rated as the organization’s top prospect by MLB.com, is hitting .283 with 12 doubles, five triples, 10 home runs and 39 RBIs in 73 games for Sugar Land this season. He has a .400 on-base percentage and a .476 slugging percentage. His team-leading 25 stolen bases rank fourth in the Pacific Coast League. Matthews, who has primarily played second base this season, was taken 28th overall by the Astros in the 2023 amateur draft. He had a great June where he earned the organization’s minor league player of the month honors after hitting .306 with six doubles, three triples, four home runs and 16 RBIs in 25 games. The 23-year-old hit for the cycle on May 10 against Sacramento when he went 4 for 6 with two RBIs.

Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado hit leadoff homers and the Padres beat the Diamondbacks 4-3 on Thursday night to split a four-game series. Machado led off the fifth inning with his 16th homer to give the Padres a 3-2 lead. Gavin Sheets then singled to chase Diamondbacks starter Eduardo Rodriguez, and Xander Bogaerts doubled off reliever Juan Morillo to score Sheets. The Padres improved to 50-43, while the D-backs fell to 46-48.
