SAN JOSE — The Earthquakes kept their undefeated streak alive at four games with some help from the New York Red Bulls, who allowed an own goal during a 1-1 draw at PayPal Park on Saturday night.

An own goal in the 58th minute on New York’s Mohammed Sofo, who redirected a cross played by San Jose’s Cristian Espinoza into the net, accounted for San Jose’s lone goal.

By earning the point Saturday, the Earthquakes (7-7-7) stayed in sixth place in the Western Conference standings with 28 points, two points ahead of four teams that are tied for the last two playoff spots -- LAFC, Houston, Colorado and Austin FC.

San Jose overcame DeJuan Jones’ red card, having to play a man down for the match’s final 26 minutes to secure the tie. Jones’ second yellow card was assessed for his dangerous tackle on the Red Bulls’ Peter Stroud.

Despite the man disadvantage, San Jose coach Bruce Arena was playing to win and brought on attackers Preston Judd and Ousseni Bouda — the latter of whom ironically contributed on defense to block two New York attempts in crunch time. The back line and goalkeeper Daniel, named the player of the match after making three saves, closed out the game and sealed the point.

“The plan was to win the game. No question about that. They gave a great effort and I thought some fresh legs would help us,” Arena said.

The Earthquakes, 4-1-6 in their last 11 matches, are riding a four-match (1-0-3) unbeaten streak.

Emil Forsberg scored a goal in his second consecutive game for New York. Forsberg ran onto a ball played by Stroud, zig-zagged to evade a pair of defenders near the penalty spot and then slipped a rising shot inside the left post to open the scoring in the 19th minute.

“The team is doing a good job. I think (this was) a game where we can get three points and obviously circumstances preventing us from doing it. No excuses,” Arena said. “We’re 21 games in and we have 13 left. There’s a lot ahead of us. Hopefully we can have some more positive results over the next month, or put us in a position we need for a playoff spot.”

New York (8-7-6) is winless in four straight.

Carlos Miguel Coronel had three saves for the Red Bulls. New York’s Raheem Edwards was shown a straight red card in the 87th minute for arguing with the referees while on the bench.
