Detroit Country Day’s pair of stars that will return next season earned first-team selections on the Michigan Sports Writers Division 2 All-State girls basketball team.
Junior Jayla Jackson and sophomore Cece Arico each were picked from the Yellowjackets, who finished 21-6 and won a regional championship for the first time since reaching the Final Four in 2021.
Jackson averaged 18 points, scoring in double-digits all but twice over the course of the season. That included high-scoring performances in some of Country Day’s big games. She scored 33 points in the regional final victory over Yale, then poured in 25 in the team’s quarterfinal loss to Detroit Edison. In addition, she averaged 2.5 assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Arico enjoyed averages of 17 points, eight rebounds, and three assists and steals apiece. Her work on the boards led to 13 double-doubles on the year, including a near triple-double of 21 points, 12 boards and seven assists against Toledo Start. Among her outstanding playoff lines, the 5-foot-10 threat had 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists in Country Day’s regional semifinal win over Regina.
Eastern Michigan commit Alli Zajac was picked as D2 Player of the Year. She graduated as Tecumseh’s all-time leading scorer, including a game-high 14 points in this year’s title game to help lead the Indians to the state championship in a 54-44 victory over Grand Rapids West Catholic.
