When Thornton’s Kieve Campos heard the play called in the huddle, the senior wingback had a pretty good idea he was going to be open.
His intuition proved correct.
Campos was able to get behind the Kenwood secondary Saturday to haul in a 51-yard touchdown pass for the Wildcats’ first score.
That was just the start of a dominant performance by Thornton during a 54-6 win in Harvey.
The Wildcats (2-0) hope to keep the good times rolling when they open up SouthWest Suburban play at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Lockport.
When Campos returned to the sideline moments after his TD, Thornton coach Dontrell Jackson was waiting.
“Coach told me in film during the week that I was going to be open on that play,” Campos said. “We worked on that play a lot at practice, so I knew the pass was going to come to me.”
There wasn’t a defensive player within 10 yards of Campos as he waited for sophomore quarterback Derrick Williams’ pass to fall into his arms. Campos then had to fend off a couple of would-be tacklers to reach the end zone.
“He threw it up, and I adjusted to it,” Campos said of Williams’ pass. “I was focused all the way and confident I was going to catch the ball. It felt great to help out the team.”
Also helping out was Harrison Bey-Buie. The sophomore running back scored three TDs, covering 4, 3 and 3 yards. Bey-Buie finished with 92 yards on 11 carries.
Bey-Buie pointed out the speed of the game is much faster than at the sophomore level.
“The biggest adjustment is trying to avoid tackles,” he said. “Players are coming at you from all directions.”
Williams did a fine job directing the offense. He found Jacquice Baylock on a 63-yard TD pass that gave the Wildcats a 14-0 lead at 5:53 of the first quarter, and he finished 3-of-8 passing for 123 yards.
Williams capped the Wildcats’ scoring with a 10-yard TD run as the clock expired at the half to make it 54-0.
The Wildcats’ offensive line of Sylvester Schaeffer, Carmone Alexander, Jamal Jones, Trenton Clegg and Nehemiah Owens was a force. “The line was very aggressive,” Bey-Buie said. “We had a tough week of practice. We had a lot of energy.”
Senior linebacker Delonte Jones led a punishing effort by the Thornton defense, which held Kenwood to minus-9 yards rushing and 56 yards of offense in the first half.
Jones sacked Kenwood quarterback Denzel Stephens in the end zone for a safety with 4:09 left in the first quarter.
Another highlight for the Wildcats was DeShawnte Carraway returning a fumble 99 yards for a TD.
“The defense likes to set the tone and pick everybody else up,” Jones said.
