Coco Gauff overcame 10 double-faults and the first set she’s dropped in the tournament to beat Madison Keys 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-1 at the French Open and reach the semifinals for the third time.

Wednesday’s contest was filled with plenty of mistakes by both Americans, who each has claimed one major championship.

They combined for 101 unforced errors and just 40 winners. The No. 2-seeded Gauff will now face 361st-ranked Loïs Boisson, who is on an upset run for the ages in her native land.

One the men’s side, Novak Djokovic eliminated 2024 runner-up Alexander Zverev in the French Open quarterfinals 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

Djokovic’s victory allowed him to reach his 51st Grand Slam semifinal and move two wins away from his record 25th major trophy.

Next up is a showdown for Djokovic on Friday against No. 1 Jannik Sinner. Sinner beat No. 62 Alexander Bublik 6-1, 7-5, 6-0.

The other men’s semifinal will be Carlos Alcaraz against Lorenzo Musetti.

Lynx

Team cuts French prospect Badiane

The Lynx have cut ties with international prospect Marième Badiane.

Minnesota waived the French national who is a star for the French national team and Istanbul-based Fenerbahçe. Badiane played in three games for the Lynx after signing with the club on Feb. 1, playing a total of 11 minutes with two steals and a rebound.

A 6-foot-4 post, Badiane helped France reach the championship game in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Playing with Lynx stars Napheesa Collier and Kayla McBride, she was part of Fenerbahçe’s FIBA EuroLeague and KBSL championships last spring.

One of two unbeaten teams in the WNBA, the Lynx (8-0) will play a Commissioner’s Cup game at Dallas on Sunday. Tip is set for 3 p.m. The Lynx are 2-0 in the WNBA’s in-season tournament.

Collier wins first West player of month honors

Lynx forward Napheesa Collier has been named the Kia WNBA Western Conference Player of the Month for the first month of the 2025 season. This marks the first of Collier’s career, making her the sixth Lynx player to receive the honor.

During the month of May, Collier averaged 26.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.4 steals and 1.4 blocks in 35:19 minutes per game.

Minnesota opened the season with a 6-0 start in May, the team’s best start since 2017.

Bases-loaded walk helps St. Paul rally for victory

Edouard Julien walked with the bases loaded to score Payton Eeles and give the Saints the lead for good in a 7-5 win over visiting Scranton/Wilkes Barre at CHS Field.

St. Paul improved to 29-27 on the season as Kyle Bischoff earned the win with two innings of scoreless relief.

Richard Lovelady tossed a scoreless ninth for the save.

Eeles went 3-for-4 in the game with three runs scored in the victory.

NBA

Suns hire Cavs’ assistant Ott as new head coach

The Phoenix Suns have hired Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott as their head coach, opting for a young, emerging leader to rebuild a franchise that has regressed as of late.

Ott will be the team’s fourth head coach in four seasons and replaces Mike Budenholzer, who was fired following a miserable 36-46 season that ended without a trip to the playoffs despite featuring the high-priced trio of Devin Booker, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal.

Ott, 40, has worked for the Atlanta Hawks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and the Cavaliers.

Ott and fellow Cavs assistant Johnnie Bryant were the two finalists for the job. Both worked under Kenny Atkinson, helping lead Cleveland to a 64-18 record this season, the best record in the NBA’s Eastern Conference.

Penguins hire Rangers assistant Muse as coach

Dan Muse is the new head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Penguins hired the former New York Rangers assistant and tasked him with helping the franchise navigate a rebuild during the twilight of longtime captain Sidney Crosby’s career.

Muse replaces Mike Sullivan. Sullivan and the Penguins split in April after a nearly decade-long tenure that included a pair of Stanley Cup titles. The Rangers scooped up Sullivan, naming him their coach in May.

Tampa Bay’s Kucherov wins Ted Lindsay Award

Hart Trophy finalist Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning won the Ted Lindsay award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as chosen by his peers.

Kucherov was the league’s leading scorer with 121 points on 37 goals and 84 assists.

League-worst Rockies earn first sweep of year

The Colorado Rockies beat the Miami Marlins 3-2 to complete a sweep in their first series win of the season.

Rockies starter Kyle Freeland allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings for his first victory since September 2024.

Colorado, which began the series with a major league-worst 9-50 record, won its third straight for the first time this season.

It was the Rockies’ first three-game sweep since they beat the San Diego Padres in May 2024.

Giants designate former Twin Wade for assignment

The struggling San Francisco Giants designated infielder-outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment.

The 31-year-old Wade, who hit a career-high .260 last season, was batting .167 (24 for 144) in 50 games this year.
