


Sinner wins in return from doping ban before home crowd at Italian Open
ROME >> After a wait of more than 100 days, Jannik Sinner still knows how to win a tennis match.
The top-ranked player made a solid return from his three-month doping ban by beating 99th-ranked Mariano Navone 6-3, 6-4 before an adoring home crowd at the Italian Open on Saturday.
In the women’s tournament, three-time champion Iga Swiatek was beaten by Danielle Collins 6-1, 7-5.
Swiatek, the top clay-court player on the women’s tour, was coming off a lopsided loss to Coco Gauff in the Madrid Open semifinals last week. She has 15 days to rediscover her form before the French Open starts on May 25.
Canada shuts out Slovenia, MacKinnon has goal, two assists in opener
STOCKHOLM >> Canada opened the ice hockey world championship by shutting out newcomer Slovenia 4-0 on Saturday.
Bo Horvat scored two power-play goals, Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists and Noah Dobson also scored on a power play. Dylan Garand made 11 saves for Canada in the Group A game in the Swedish capital.
Last year’s bronze medalist Sweden had to rally late to top Austria 4-2 in Stockholm.
Last year’s runner up Switzerland rebounded from a 5-4 overtime defeat to the Czech Republic by beating host Denmark 5-2 in the Danish city of Herning.
Earlier in Herning, Germany routed another newcomer Hungary 6-1 in Group B after Kazakhstan beat Norway 2-1.
Also in Stockholm, Latvia beat France 4-1.
Tarling wins Giro stage 2 by a second over new overall leader Roglic
TIRANA, Albania>> British cyclist Joshua Tarling beat pre-race favorite Primoz Roglic by a solitary second in an individual time trial to win the second stage of the Giro d’Italia on Saturday.
Roglic moved into the pink jersey, albeit only just.
Tarling, who rides for Ineos Grenadiers, finished the 8.5-mile route through the Albanian capital of Tirana in 16 minutes, seven seconds. Roglic crossed the line just a second slower.
The Invincibles: Chelsea completes historic unbeaten campaign
Chelsea became the first team to complete an undefeated 22-game campaign in the Women’s Super League after beating Liverpool 1-0 at Stamford Bridge in the final round on Saturday.
Already crowned champion for a sixth straight year, Chelsea finished with 60 points — 12 more than second-place Arsenal — after 19 wins and three draws.
After a stoppage-time goal by Aggie Beever-Jones clinched victory over Liverpool, Chelsea captain Millie Bright lifted the trophy to a backdrop of fireworks.
Angel City defender King stable after collapsing during game against Royals
LOS ANGELES >> Angel City defender Savy King was hospitalized in stable condition Saturday, a day after she was stretchered off the field because of what the NWSL called a “medical event” during a match against the Utah Royals.
The NWSL released a statement saying King also was stable when she was taken to the hospital after collapsing on the field during Friday night’s match. She will undergo further evaluation.
Players on both sides were visibly shaken as trainers rushed to King’s side after she went down in the 74th minute.
