A Matteson woman died of gunshot wounds after she was found Thursday night slumped over in the driver’s seat of a van on Cicero Avenue in the suburb, according to police.
Police were dispatched just before 11:30 p.m. for a call of a black van stopped in the median in the 21600 block of Cicero, and officers found evidence of five bullet holes in the vehicle, police said in a statement.
The woman was identified by the Cook County medical examiner as Joanie Balogun, 37, and her death was ruled a homicide.
Police said she was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead as a result of two gunshot wounds. Officers found five spent shell casings on Cicero about 100 yards south of where the vehicle was parked, according to the statement.
Matteson detectives and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are investigating, Matteson police said.
Investigators are seeking information about a dark-gray four-door sedan that may have been involved, and anyone with information is asked to contact police at 708-748-5931.
