Erie voters were in favor of a marijuana excise tax according to unofficial combined votes from Boulder and Weld counties early Tuesday evening.

As of 7:20 p.m., the Colorado Secretary of State website showed 53% voted for the excise tax and 47% voted against the tax out of 7,940 votes, according to online election results.

If the issue passes, a 5% excise tax will be placed on the sale of retail marijuana in town on Jan. 1. The issue does not allow for the sale of retail marijuana, as the town currently has a moratorium against marijuana sales. The Erie Town Council would need to vote to end the moratorium before retail marijuana sales would be allowed.

If all of those requirements are met, officials estimate that a 5% marijuana excise tax could generate $800,000 in revenue its first fiscal year.
