Pinky’s Rooftop is the latest in a string of restaurants at 100 S. Main St. in Royal Oak that have closed.

Known for its rooftop terrace and its signature cocktails, Pinky’s posted on its Facebook page June 19 that Saturday, June 28, was its last day in business.

It opened six years ago in a space previously occupied by the Red Fox English Pub.

The high-traffic corner of Main and 11 Mile Road in downtown Royal Oak has had a revolving door of restaurants.

In the lower space, Diamond’s Steak & Seafood, Memphis Smoke and Cantina Diablo’s all came and went in the last few years.

Adam Merkel, a restaurateur with several eateries in Howell, owned or co-owned Pinky’s and Diamond’s.

“Our goal was to bring a standout, one-of-a-kind experience to Royal Oak’s dining and nightlife scene, and I think we hit it,” he said in an interview with the Daily Tribune when Pinky’s opened.

It was inspired by an old restaurant and one-time speakeasy in Detroit called Pinky’s Boulevard Club.

In the Detroit area, the recent dining scene counted more than two dozen debuts, including a new location for HopCat in Southgate. HopCat, known for its craft beer selection and comfort food, has several locations in metro Detroit, including one in Royal Oak. HopCat closed its location at 208 W. Fifth in 2020, but reopened two years later at 430 S. Main St.

Though many restaurants are opening, a significant number have recently closed. In addition to Pinky’s, Bobcat Bonnie’s in Ferndale closed in early June.

It was the latest in a string of closings for the restaurant group, which shuttered locations in the Corktown neighborhood of Detroit, Wyandotte, Ypsilanti and Clinton Township over the past several months, according to a report in The Detroit News.

Dana Taucher, owner of the Ferndale cocktail lounge Syndicate will take over the space, the report said.
