


Berlin wants to host again as 100th anniversary of 1936 Games looms
BERLIN>> Berlin is making a bid to host the Olympics again, possibly 100 years after the city hosted the 1936 Games under the Nazis. Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner is to present bid plans with help from four other German states on Tuesday at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
The next available Games will be in 2036 after Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympics and Brisbane the 2032 Olympics. The German Olympic Sports Confederation says a German bid for the 2040 Games is also possible.
Ohtani to face hitters Saturday in pitching rehab
NEW YORK>> Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to face hitters Saturday for the first time in his recovery from right elbow surgery. The two-way superstar will throw live batting practice at Citi Field before the Los Angeles Dodgers play the New York Mets, manager Dave Roberts announced Friday.
It’s the next step for Ohtani as he works toward returning to the mound. He had right elbow surgery on Sept. 19, 2023, and hasn’t pitched in a major league game since Aug. 23 that year for the Los Angeles Angels.
There is no target date yet for his pitching debut with the Dodgers, though expectations are it could come in July.
Guardians RHP Lively to have Tommy John surgery, will miss rest of season
DETROIT>> Guardians pitcher Ben Lively will undergo Tommy John reconstruction surgery on his right elbow and will be sidelined for the rest of the season.
The Guardians said before Friday night’s game at Detroit that Lively’s surgical date has not been set, but it will be performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. The right-hander is expected to miss 12-16 months.
Lively has been on the injured list since May 13 due to a strained right flexor tendon. He sought a second opinion on his right elbow with Meister earlier this week.
Del Toro adds 5 seconds to his Giro lead and Pedersen wins his fourth stage
VICENZA, Italy>> Mexican rider Isaac Del Toro keeps on adding to his Giro d’Italia lead. Even if it’s just a few seconds per day. Del Toro’s third-place finish in the 13th stage Friday extended his lead over UAE Team Emirates teammate Juan Ayuso by five seconds.
Danish rider Mads Pedersen claimed his fourth stage win of this year’s race with a burst of acceleration up the ascent to the Monte Berico sanctuary.
Wout van Aert crossed second with the same time as Pedersen and Del Toro finished third. Del Toro crossed two seconds behind but three seconds ahead of all the other overall contenders. Del Toro now leads Ayuso by 38 seconds with Antonio Tiberi 1:18 back in third.
Djokovic advances to Geneva Open final seeking 100th career singles title
GENEVA>> Novak Djokovic is one win from a 100th career singles title on the ATP tour after advancing to the final at the Geneva Open. The 24-time Grand Slam singles champion let a match-point chance slip in the second set before beating British qualifier Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-7 (6), 6-1 on Friday.
Djokovic plays Hubert Hurkacz in the final on Saturday. The 31st-ranked Pole won against Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner in straight sets. jokovic has won on three straight days on Geneva for his first victories in the European clay-court season.
