St. Francis High flag football standout Maya Calfee was named MVP of the Pacific Coast Athletic League’s Mission Division.
The 5-foot-6 sophomore wide receiver/free safety and 5-4 freshman teammate Lilianna Whitmeyer, who was named the Mission Division’s Defensive Player of the Year, helped the Sharks go 26-5 overall, 18-0 in the division.
The Sharks reached the league tournament semifinals, where they lost to Watsonville.
Palma senior Allison Guerra was named the division’s Offensive Player of the Year.
The Sharks scored 1,030 points this season, and Calfee and Whitmeyer, a quarterback and cornerback, were responsible for 85% of that total.
Both girls are also teammates on the Sharks’ basketball team. (Calfee was named MVP of the Cypress Division a year ago.)
Ask Sharks coach Frank Galvan, and he’d tell you Whitmeyer could’ve, just as easily, been awarded the division’s offensive POY honor.
“She’s amazing,” he said. “She can run the ball, pass the ball, and she has a high IQ. She sets up the pass well. She looks safeties away. She’s very, very athletic.”
With Whitmeyer throwing the ball, and Calfee catching it, the tandem was good for three to four touchdowns a game, their coach said.
“Maya was amazing,” Galvan said. “She’d catch passes of 10 yards and 20 yards and do her thing, and score. We had other weapons, but she’d also scored two-point conversions and pick-sixes.”
Galvan said Calfee returned 10 interceptions for touchdowns.
“Maya is an athlete,” Galvan said. “She can play. I’ve been coaching a long time, 20-plus years, and she can catch better than some boys. She has outstanding hands and surprisingly deceiving speed.”
Calfee helped the Sharks go 18-2 as a freshman.
Calfee and Whitmeyer were named to the first team on offense. Sharks sophomore linebacker Talia Moakler and freshmen defensive backs Evonne Jordan and Keira Grio were named to the first team defense.
Pacific Collegiate School sophomore defensive back Grace Furr was also a first-team pick.
In the Gabilan Division, the top tier of the PCAL, King City quarterback Katia Slama was named MVP. Hollister senior Jasayla Mariscal was named Offensive POY, and Salinas sophomore Taylor Ramirez was named Defensive POY.
Watsonville didn’t have a first-team selection, but it had four players named to the second team: Senior quarterback Fernanda Lazo, senior receiver Brianna Leon, freshman running back Isa Alvarez, and sophomore rusher Taylor Alves.
