49ers tight end George Kittle, Vikings running back Aaron Jones and Chargers defensive end Morgan Fox are the finalists for the NFL’s 14th annual Salute to Service award presented by USAA.
The award is part of the NFL and USAA’s year-round commitment to recognize and honor the military and veteran community.
Each of the NFL’s 32 teams nominated a candidate who best demonstrated support for the military community. The nominees announced in November included active and retired players, coaches and team executives and personnel.
The Salute to Service award recipient will be announced at NFL Honors on Feb. 6.
“Our three finalists for the 2024 Salute to Service award are all deserving of recognition for their long-standing and unwavering commitment to honoring the military community,” said Major General (Ret.) John Richardson, USAA’s senior vice president and head of military affairs.
USAA will contribute $25,000 in the award recipient’s honor to the official aid societies representing each of the military branches. The NFL Foundation will match that donation, which will go directly to the recipient’s military charity of choice.
The finalists were selected based on a consensus fan vote, an NFL internal committee and USAA.
COWBOYS’ SEARCH >> The Dallas Cowboys have requested permission to interview Philadelphia offensive coordinator Kellen Moore in their search to replace Mike McCarthy.
The Cowboys also plan to interview former NFL head coaches Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier.
Moore has a long history with the Cowboys, including four seasons as Dak Prescott’s play-caller. Three of those were after McCarthy was hired in 2020. The Cowboys and McCarthy parted ways this week after five seasons.
The Cowboys can meet virtually with Moore before the Eagles’ season is over. The NFC East champions play the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round at home Sunday.
Moore joined the Cowboys as a quarterback in 2015 and was Prescott’s backup in 2017 before retiring as a player and immediately becoming his position coach. Just a year later, Moore took over the play-calling for former coach Jason Garrett’s final season in 2019.
McCarthy called plays for most of his long tenure in Green Bay, which included a Super Bowl title during the 2010 season, but decided to keep Moore in that role. Moore and the Cowboys parted ways in 2023.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has spoken informally with Colorado coach Deion Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback who spent five seasons with the Cowboys.
