It was no surprise that Mountain View pitched around South El Monte’s Jazmine Leyva in her first two plate appearances, walking her on four pitches each time.

Leyva, a UCLA commit, showed what happens when you finally do challenge her. Leyva belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning, her ninth of the season, providing the finishing touches on a five-inning shortened 10-0 victory in Friday’s Mission Valley League softball game due to the mercy rule.

The Eagles (11-5, 3-0) remained undefeated in league, handing the Vikings (5-9, 2-2) their second league loss.

While Leyva’s home run was impressive, she will have to wait another day to share or set the CIF-SS career doubles record.

Leyva belted her 55th career double March 22, leaving her one shy of the record set by University Prep’s Justice Borden (56 in 2016).

It didn’t help that Leyva was walked twice, but with plenty of games left in the season, the record should come eventually.

“Almost there, it’s crazy to be that close (to the record),” Leyva said. “I was just trying to hit the ball hard somewhere, not trying to force it, and made something happen (home run) out of nothing. It was great, we won, whenever it (record) happens, it happens.”

Leyva is batting .639 with 23 RBIs to go with nine home runs. The speedy outfielder also has seven doubles, and coach Dean Bunting knows there are more to come, he just hopes it happens sooner rather than later.

“It seems like she’s been stuck at 55 for a while,” Bunting said. “She’s such an incredible player, and it’s probably a little frustrating for her. We want her to get the double’s thing over with her. I think it’s on her mind a little. Once it’s over she can relax and not be thinking about it.”

The Eagles took care of business early.

Leyva walked in the first inning and scored on Alexis Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly to center for a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles exploded for seven runs in the third inning.

Sofia Medina singled home Rodriguez, and Medina scored on a sacrifice fly. Katelyn Berumen followed with a two-run double. After adding another score, Elise Gonzalez singled home two more runs to make it 8-0.

Leyva followed with her two-run homer in the fourth.
