A new restaurant with a retro vibe that combines American car culture with great burgers and comfort food is coming to Macomb County this summer.
Ford’s Garage will take over the space formerly occupied by Italian food favorite Buca di Beppo on Hall Road (M-59) near the M-53 expressway in Utica.
Known for being modeled after a 1920s service station, each Ford’s Garage is packed with Ford memorabilia, including vintage fixtures and gas pumps, as well as a Model T or Model A car suspended above the center bar.
That gives diners and gearheads alike plenty to look at as they wait for their food.
“We’ve been looking to get into the Golden Corridor for 18 months now,” said owner Billy Downs, referring to M-59’s moniker. “Over the past seven years, we’ve heard a lot of guests from Macomb County in our other restaurants express interest in Ford’s.
“We’re super-excited to deliver that product.”
Downs, founder of bd’s Mongolian Grill, is president of Tampa, Fla.-based Ford’s Garage. The Utica location will be the third in Michigan, along with establishments in Dearborn and Novi. There are 32 other garages in eight states.
Ford’s Garage was founded in 2012 in Ft. Myers, Florida, where Henry Ford had a winter home. It was followed by 20 franchise locations in Florida, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas.
In Utica it will occupy an 8,000-square-foot space.
Utica Mayor Gus Calandrino said he’s excited to be welcoming Ford’s Garage to his town. He said the venue is as much loved for its food as it is for its captivating atmosphere.
“I believe Ford’s Garage will be a great fit along the Golden Corridor,” Calandrino said. “The automotive theme will be appreciated by residents of Utica and our neighboring cities.”
Ford’s Garage is an official licensee of Ford Motor Co., which allows them to outfit the inside and exterior of the restaurants with Ford brand imagery, including the iconic Ford blue-oval logo.
The décor includes vintage vehicles, fixtures and gas pumps, with accessories like napkins made from blue shop towels, bathroom sinks that resemble tires and fuel pump nozzles that are used as faucets. To add to the ambiance, servers wear mechanic shirts.
But where the rubber really meets the road is the food and beverage quality.
Burgers are made with Black Angus beef, served with all-natural aged cheeses, fresh toppings and flavorful sauces on artisan buns branded with the Ford’s Garage logo. The menu includes a range of comfort food such as meatloaf, chicken wings and tenders, onion rings, macaroni & cheese, along with salads, grilled chicken and various seafood options.
Desserts include milkshakes and sundaes.
The restaurant serves wine, cocktails and non-alcoholic options as well as a selection of beers, including drafts, with an emphasis on local breweries.
“We’re definitely known for our burgers and craft beer selections,” Downs said.
Construction is expected to begin soon and the eatery will be open by the Fourth of July, a spokesperson said Tuesday.
