While last week featured a few surprising upsets, The Press Democrat’s prep boys basketball rankings this week don’t change much.
Cardinal Newman keeps its spot at No. 1 — and it doesn’t seem likely that the Cardinals will drop out of that position this year.
Casa Grande moves back up to No. 2 as it looks to continue its hot streak with a crucial stretch approaching. The Gauchos have won six in a row and currently hold the top spot in the Vine Valley Athletic League with four games to play. Over the next week, they’ll need to fend off the three other league challengers in Justin-Siena, Sonoma Valley and Napa if they want to clinch their second straight league title.
Although Windsor went 2-0 last week and took sole control of second place in the North Bay League Oak division, the Jaguars will slide to No. 3 this week. That’s solely due to the head-to-head 58-47 win Casa Grande had over the Jags back in December. That was the tiebreaker, since their resumes are so even.
This is where more movement might have been expected but didn’t materialize. Justin-Siena falls from No. 3 to No. 4 after losing to Napa last week. That loss could have dropped the Braves further if not for No. 5 Montgomery’s tough week. The Vikings lost to Analy last week for the first time in 15 years but also won’t drop because of the teams below them.
No. 6 Rancho Cotate lost to Montgomery by 38 earlier this year, a result that we can’t dismiss even two months later.
Additionally, No. 7 Sonoma Valley should probably also drop out of the top seven after losing to Vintage last week, but there’s no clear answer on who would replace the Dragons. The best choice might be Analy — which defeated Montgomery and a solid small-school team in Sonoma Academy last week — but Sonoma Valley still has the best win between the two schools with the Dragons’ victory vs. Justin-Siena.
