On the evening of October 31, 2025, our beloved Michael Shaun Riley, MD, passed away at the age of 80 in Riverside, California.
Michael was born in Dallas, Texas, on August 8, 1945, and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is survived by his loving wife, Lori Riley, his daughter Taylor Riley, his sisters Kathleen Riley Nunn and Ruth Riley Mack, his parents-in-law Susan and Robert Harwood, his daughter-in-law Sonja Trattner, his sister-in-law, and his nieces, nephews, nephews’ children, and some dear friends. He is also survived by his grandchild, who will be arriving soon, and for whom Michael conveyed his deepest love.
Michael to many, Dr. Riley to countless others, frequently referred to as legendary, he was loved and admired by so many people. He was an accomplished physician who never wavered in his comprehensive and empathetic care of his patients, for whom he went above and beyond. He was a loving husband and dedicated father, a kind and supportive brother, and a friend, mentor, and caretaker to many in multiple ways.
Michael was an intellectual who enjoyed reading and was prone to quiet contemplation. He had a wicked sense of humor, was incredibly charismatic, and was a sharp-dressed man. He was loving and spiritual. He was a guitarist, a smoker, and a coffee drinker who loved blues music, Manhattans on the rocks, motorcycles, and cars (Jaguars in particular). He collected quite a few t-shirts and hats and relished in the satisfaction of a job well done.
Having lost his own parents young, Michael still did his best to enjoy life, and he took pride in keeping wolves away from the door. He was often late, but he was always, always worth the wait. He is already missed more than words can express.
We request privacy at this time while we grieve for him, but look forward to sharing stories and continuing his legacy with you in the near future. We plan to remember Michael in a memorial service in Riverside, CA in the spring of 2026.
