The Mitchell Gallery will celebrate its one-year anniversary in March, and will host a reception with refreshments during Arts Alive! on Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Linda Mitchell, the gallery’s owner, will feature her own paintings throughout the month.

“I haven’t done much new work since opening the gallery, so the paintings I’m showing in March will be older ones and I’m selling them at a discount to help fund the gallery into its second year,” said Mitchell.

Paintings from a variety of series that Mitchell has undertaken over the years will be exhibited, including street scenes, interiors, trees, landscapes and dancers. The gallery will also exhibit the work of several other local women artists in March, including Regina Case, Micki Flatmo, Susanna Gallisdorfer, Joan Gold, Georgia Long, Emma Miller, Dana Mitchell, Natalie Mitchell, Theresa Oats, Kathy O’Leary, Iris Schencke and Rachel Schlueter.

The Mitchell Gallery is the third gallery Mitchell has developed since moving to Humboldt County from Southern California in 1992. In the late ’90’s, she co-owned the Cody Gallery in Old Town, where she and her husband Bill Cody exhibited the work of many local artists. A few years later Mitchell and fellow artist Micki Flatmo established and co-owned Eureka Studio Arts, a teaching studio and art gallery.

“I didn’t plan to open another gallery at this time in my life, but when this space opened up in the heart of Old Town, I couldn’t resist taking it on,” said Mitchell. “It’s a beautiful little space and creating a place for local women artists to exhibit their work has been personally rewarding in so many ways. There’s a lot of destruction happening in the world right now, so I think it’s important to support artists and makers, the people who are creating and building things, in any way I can.”

The Mitchell Gallery is located at 425 Snug Alley, behind the gazebo in Old Town Eureka. The gallery is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Mitchell at 707-497-9086 or lindamitchellgallery@gmail.com.
