Sophomore guard Hanna Shehorn made two 3-pointers and scored a game-high 18 points, and Scotts Valley High’s girls basketball team knocked off host Aptos 46-28 in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener Tuesday.
The Falcons kept an opponent to less than 30 points for the fourth time this season. They’re holding opponents to an average of 33.8 points through 13 games.
“I thought we played good team basketball tonight,” Falcons coach Stu Hurvitz said. “We came out with a game plan and they executed it.”
Asked to elaborate on the the game plan, Hurvitz said, “Not give up more than 30 points. And, obviously, score more. Very simple, but we’ve been working on some different presses and we were able to execute them tonight.”
Scotts Valley reaped the rewards of its full-court press and stingy mix of man-to-man and zone defenses. It forced numerous turnovers, and if the Falcons didn’t score in transition, they were more than comfortable settling into their patient, pass-happy, half-court offense.
The Falcons (11-2, 1-0) outscored the Mariners 16-3 in the second quarter and carried a 27-10 lead into the half.
“We came in with confidence, knowing we could beat them if we played our game,” Shehorn said. “And we went out there and played our game.”
Junior guard Brooklyn Williams scored 11 points for the Falcons. Junior forward Amaya Guerra scored seven points, and classmate Sammy Rebbert, a guard, scored six.
“Us playing as a team out there, and really passing the ball,” said Shehorn, of the things she was impressed with. “We all shared the points. I had a good game. I feel like everyone contributed, and all my teammates helped get me open. They set screens and everything.”
