LOS ANGELES >> The Quakes kept LA Football Club scoreless through the first half Saturday night at BMO Stadium despite an injury to starting keeper Daniel, but could not hold on as Denis Bouanga contributed a goal and an assist to beat San Jose 2-1.

Los Angeles defender Sergi Palencia scored his first career MLS goal in the 65th minute. Bouanga, on the left side, cut back to evade a defender and blasted a shot from the corner of the penalty area that was parried by goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr., but Palencia slammed home the rebound to open the scoring.

Edwards, acquired over the offseason from New England, took over in the 20th minute after Daniel went down with a head injury following a collision with LAFC striker Olivier Giroud.

“I think the part that was interesting is that I’m not sure if there was a foul called or a yellow card and you take a goalkeeper out with a concussion,” Quakes coach Bruce Arena said.

Giroud contributed to the game-sealing goal in the 86th minute. On the counter-attack, Giroud’s shot from the top of the penalty arc was parried by a diving Edwards but Bouanga tapped the rebound inside the near post to make it 2-0.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Josef Martínez calmly waited as three defenders closed in near the penalty spot, then tapped a pass to Cristian Espinoza for a first-touch finish that got San Jose (3-4-1, 10 points) on the board. But it was not enough to avoid a loss.

Each team had a golden chance in the opening 15 minutes of the game, but Bouanga skied an opportunity over the crossbar and Martinez sent his shot directly at LAFC keeper Hugo Lloris, keeping the game scoreless.

The Quakes had an equalizer from Chicho Arango ruled offside in the 73rd minute and pleaded for a handball penalty kick in the game’s dying moments as the ball bounced off LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead’s arm, but the Video Assistant Referee ruled against San Jose.

“We had a bunch of guys that played well, and so did they. It was a good game and give them credit,” Arena said. “I think coming off a midweek game like they did and show the kind of competitiveness they did, give them a lot of credit as well.”
