The San Rafael Pacifics are sending a host of first-time selections to the Pecos League’s seventh annual Pacific Division All-Star Game. And for the first time in franchise history, the Pacifics will host the all-star event.

San Rafael’s Aki Buckson is a repeat selection to the all-star game, which has been hosted by Monterey the past four years. This year, he’ll be joined by Pacifics teammate and younger brother Fred Buckson, a first-time all-star. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. at Albert Park.

Past Pacifics all-star and pitcher of the year Alex Valasek and former Chicago Cubs draft pick Chris Allen both trace their roots back to nearby College of Marin. Now the two San Rafael teammates will be pitching in Wednesday’s all-star game together.

San Rafael’s home run leader John Bicos (10), Kyle Guerra and Jake Dent are also making return appearances at the all-star game. They’ll be joined by first-time San Rafael selections Payton Rios, Keith Whitaker and rookie pitchers Nick Gajewski and Richard Kiel.

“What makes me most excited is guys are fighting to reach that next level and show how good they are,” said Austin Fitzpatrick, the Pacifics director of operations and former manager. “They’ve put together the stats and they’re good representatives for their teams. It’s an absolute honor for these guys to be selected.”

San Rafael manager Chris Johnson will lead the West squad, including players from the division-leading Pacifics, the Vallejo Seaweed and Dublin Leprechauns. Bakersfield Train Robbers manager Bill Rogan will lead the East squad with players from Bakersfield, Monterey and Martinez.

“We are proud to continue the tradition of the San Rafael Pacifics. Hosting our All-Star recognizes our respect and appreciation for Albert Park and the City of San Rafael.” said Pecos League owner Andrew Dunn in announcing the all-star game.

The defending division champion Pacifics (31-13) have just nine scheduled games — six at home — before the start of the postseason.

They host the second-place Train Robbers (26-17) for a two-game set Thursday and Friday before playing Vallejo (15-29) at home Saturday.
