A LaPorte man who swerved to avoid a squirrel that ran into the road Monday afternoon took out a utility pole instead, according to the Porter Police Department.

The crash took place around 3:45 p.m. Monday on Waverly Road near State Park Road, according to a report.

The driver, 61, who was in a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder, told police he was traveling south on Waverly Road approaching State Park Road when a squirrel ran out in front of him and he swerved and caught the edge of the roadway.

That pulled him into a ditch and he struck a Northern Indiana Public Service Co. pole, he told police.

When officers arrived, a power line was on the man’s vehicle. NIPSCO responded to the scene to remove the line before the driver could exit the vehicle, police said.

Traffic was blocked on Waverly Road for a short time and the Porter Fire Department responded as well, police said.
