Former San Jose Sharks star Tomas Hertl and Keegan Kolesar scored a minute apart to give Vegas the lead, and the Golden Knights beat the Ottawa Senators 6-4 on Friday.

Ivan Barbashev had two goals, and Nicolas Roy and Nicolas Hagu ealso scored for the Golden Knights. Alex Pietrangelo had three assists, and Jack Eichel, Mark Stone and Tanner Pearson each added two. Ex-Sharks goalie Adin Hill made 34 saves to earn his third win of the season.

Vegas has now scored six goals in back-to-back games and is averaging 4.37 goals per game.

Adam Gaudette had two goals while Claude Giroux and Drake Bratherson also scored for the Senators. Linus Ullmark made 22 saves.

For Vegas, both Stone and Eichel continued their offensive tear, as they’ve registered at least one point in seven of Vegas’ first eight games this season. Stone leads the team with 14 points, with Eichel just behind with 13.

Trailing 4-3, the Golden Knights got back-to-back goals from Hertl and Kolesar with a little more than three minutes left in the game. Barbashev’s empty-netter sealed the win.

The Golden Knights, who improved to 5-2-1, are now a perfect 5-0-0 at home with the San Jose Sharks visiting Vegas tonight.

Rangers extend Lafrenière >> New York Rangers signed winger Alexis Lafrenière to a seven-year contract extension. The deal is worth $52.15 million, according to a person with knowledge of the contract.

The No. 1 pick in the 2020 draft set career highs with 28 goals, 29 assists and 57 points last season. Lafrenière, 23, is off to a point-a-game start to this one, as well, with seven in seven.

Golf

Echavarria keeps lead after another 64 >> Nico Echavarria shot a 6-under 64 — matching his 64 on Thursday — to lead by two shots over Taylor Moore and Justin Thomas after the second round of the Zozo Championship in Japan.

Thomas shot 64 and Moore carded 67 with three others just three shots off the lead including Seamus Power, who had the day’s low round of 62 at the Narashino Country Club.

Stark takes 2nd-round LPGA lead >> Maja Stark shot a 6-under 66 to take the lead after two rounds of the LPGA Tour’s Maybank Championship in Malaysia, with 34-year-old American Marina Alex just one stroke behind.

Storms forced an early stop to play, with about 12 players — all of them several strokes out of the lead — having to halt their rounds. However, they were all able to complete them later Friday.

Tennis

Shelton beats top-seed Rublev in Swiss Indoors >> Ben Shelton knocked out top-seeded Andrey Rublev 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4 in the Swiss Indoors quarterfinals in his first matchup with the Russian.

Shelton will face Arthur Fils of France, who defeated third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas 7-6 (5), 6-3.

MLS

Austin hires ex-Dallas coach Estevez >> Austin FC hired former Dallas head coach and United States national team assistant Nico Estevez to revive the club after missing the Major League Soccer playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Estevez led Dallas to the MLS playoffs in 2022 and 2023 but was fired in June after a 3-8-5 start to this season. The club finished in 11th in the Western Conference, one spot below Austin.

Estevez, who is from Spain, replaces Josh Wolff, who had been the only head coach in Austin’s four-year history.

D.C. United cuts ties with goalie >> D.C. United, which was eliminated from Major League Soccer playoff contention on the final day of the regular season, has declined starting goalkeeper Alex Bono’s contract option for next season.
