It has become one of the great rivalries in Orange County high school sports.

The Fairmont Prep and Pacifica Christian boys basketball teams meet in the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA championship game Saturday at 1 p.m. at Toyota Arena in Ontario.

They have played each other twice this season, with the teams splitting their two San Joaquin League games. Fairmont Prep won at Pacifica Christian 60-56 and Pacifica Christian won at Fairmont Prep 67-55.

They tied for the league championship with 5-1 league records.

Saturday’s game is not their first meeting in a CIF-SS championship game. Fairmont Prep beat Pacifica Christian 52-49 in the 2019 4AA final.

They have also played each other in the CIF State playoffs. Fairmont Prep won 63-51 in the second round of the CIF Southern California Regional in 2019.

Both are among Orange County’s smaller private schools. Fairmont Prep, in Anaheim, has an enrollment of 600. Pacifica Christian in Newport Beach has an enrollment of 343.

“It’s one of the best rivalries in Orange County,” said Fairmont Prep coach Joedy Gardner. “The kids on both teams know each other. A lot of them train together and even play on the same teams in the offseason.”

Pacifica Christian coach Jeff Berokoff loves the rivalry, too.

“We’re always going through each other to get to the league championship,” Berokoff said. “They know how to beat us and we know how to beat them. For this game we’re going to have to look at what we did right and didn’t do right and see what needs to be fixed.”

David Abisogun, a 6-foot-10 junior forward, leads the Huskies with 18 points and 14 rebounds a game. He has averaged 22 points in the playoffs and he scored 16 points with six rebounds in Fairmont’s 63-45 win over Riverside Poly in the 4AA semifinals. Abisogun is starting to get recruiting attention from UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, Ivy League schools and many others.

Fairmont Prep 6-3 junior guard Leroy Davis is averaging 13 points a game and is among the Huskies’ top outside shooters.

Pacifica Christian 6-4 senior guard EJ Spillman is scoring 14 points a game with five assists a game. Logan Stewart, a 6-6 senior forward, averages 12 points with seven rebounds a game for the Tritons, who also get nine points a game from 6-1 junior guard Michael Noel and eight points a game from 6-2 senior guard Hudson Reynolds. Reynolds scored 19 points in the Tritons’ 84-80 double-overtime win over Centennial of Corona in the 4AA semifinals.

Spillman, who scored 33 points, including eight points in the second overtime period against Centennial, is the chauffeur of the Pacifica Christian offense.

For Spillman, a game against Fairmont Prep is a highlight of the season’s calendar.

“You can’t sleep all week and you can’t wait to play that game,” he said. “There’s mutual respect both ways. That game brings out a different gear for sure.”

Gardner said he will assign 6-1 senior guard Kamerin Lewis, who returned to action only four months after knee reconstruction surgery, on Spillman in Saturday’s game.

“Kam’s our best defender,” Gardner said. “He’s a guy who makes a difference in a game.”

It’s a game that continues a fine rivalry of two teams that annually play for a league championship. On Saturday, they meet again for a CIF championship.
