Slovakia struck with a seventh-minute goal by forward Ivan Schranz then survived a string of misses by Belgium record scorer Lukaku, who had two second-half goals overturned, and all that playmaker Kevin De Bruyne could help create.

Slovakia’s deserved win also was preserved by defender Dávid Hancko’s brave goal-line block that left him sprawled in the goal net with a face injury inflicted by a teammate’s knee.

The drama in Frankfurt came hours after Romania upended predictions by outclassing Ukraine 3-0 in Munich. Belgium fell to a first loss in 15 games under coach Domenico Tedesco and faces Romania on Saturday in Cologne.

NASCAR: Ryan Blaney had his concerns heading into the final laps Sunday night in the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at Iowa Speedway. The problem was he didn’t hear his crew chief’s reassurance. There was no need to worry, though, with the defending series champion holding on for his first victory of the season and a spot in the playoffs. Blaney seemed in control of the race, but was worried about fuel a couple of weeks after running out on the final lap while leading at World Wide Technology Raceway.

College football: Les Miles, who coached the LSU Tigers to a 2007 national championship, is suing the university over its decision to vacate 37 of his teams’ victories between 2012 and 2015. The lawsuit filed Monday in federal court in Baton Rouge alleges that LSU never gave Miles a chance to be heard before altering the coach’s career record significantly enough to disqualify him from consideration for the College Football Hall of Fame. “Les was given no right to be heard, or even advance notice of LSU’s actions, despite LSU being a state-owned and state-run institution that is bound by constitutional safeguards,” Miles’ lawyer, Peter Ginsberg, said in a statement.
