Joan Frances Sutay, of Santa Cruz, California, peacefully passed away Friday, January 24, 2025. Born in Glendale, New York on November 29, 1934, is preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Frances Sutay; ex-husband Raymond Hanagan Jr.; son Stefan Hanagan; and son David Hanagan.

Joan Sutay, a young New York transplant to the west coast married Raymond Hanagan, of Marysville, CA. in 1954. Together they had six children; Stefan, Barbara, Paul, David, Maureen and John. By the mid 1970's Joan was in pursuit of her dreams and enrolled as a student at Cabrillo College; an A student and part of the vibrant Women's Reentry Program. A divorce, a move to UCSC student housing cumulating in a celebratory bachelors degree in Art History, followed by a year of study in England at the University of East Anglia. Joan also traveled extensively outside the U.S.

Later, Joan settled back into family life supported by her children and six grandchildren. She had a life time enjoyment of classical music, art and medieval history, Masterpiece Theater, BBC programming, and her devotion to FDR. Joan greatly enjoyed and was proud of her volunteer work for Friends of the Santa Cruz Library.

Joan is survived by her sister Mary Ellen Chick, of Loomis, Ca.; daughter Barbara Hanagan; son Paul Hanagan; daughter Maureen Hanagan; and son John Hanagan. Grandchildren; Riley Hanagan; Marin Bickner; Jack Hanagan; Joe Hanagan; Haven Thompson; and Evie Harra.

A private family memorial will be held, with detail to be announced soon.
