Mountain View baseball coach Angel Lopez said Shalhevet, a Jewish private school in Los Angeles, forfeited Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division 9 playoff game. The CIF Southern Section is looking into the situation.
Lopez said Shalhevet did not forfeit the game for religious reasons. He said it was his understanding that Shalhevet, along with another CIF-SS team, YULA, is competing this week in the Columbus Baseball Invitational in Ohio, a tournament for Jewish Day schools.
Shalhevet was supposed to host Tuesday’s game against Mountain View, which advances to Friday’s quarterfinals.
YULA also forfeited in its playoff game Tuesday in Division 8 against Beverly Hills, CIF-SS assistant commissioner Thom Simmons confirmed Tuesday morning.
The Columbus Baseball Invitational began Sunday and lists Shalhevet and YULA as participating teams.
If Shalhevet and YULA are participating in a non-CIF tournament during the high school season, the teams could face sanctions from the CIF-SS for playing outside competition during its season.
Simmons said the CIF-SS is investigating.
