A man was arrested Friday after reportedly driving a stolen vehicle from Denver to Boulder County and crashing into another car at North 95th Street and Valmont Road.
Esgar Escalera-Hernandez, 34, is charged with first-degree motor vehicle theft, vehicular trespass — intent to commit crime, third-degree trespass, reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
He is set for a preliminary hearing on Nov. 12 and is being held in custody on a $5,000 bond.
According to an affidavit, at 12:50 p.m. Friday, detectives spotted a vehicle reported stolen by Castle Rock police on Oct. 23.
Detectives saw two men inside the stolen vehicle at the Valero Gas Station at 6140 Federal Boulevard in Denver and began setting up a perimeter when the vehicle left the gas station and traveled north on Federal Boulevard towards Pecos Street.
While on Pecos Street, the driver of the vehicle ran a red light and police began pursuing the vehicle, according to the affidavit. The vehicle then headed west on U.S. 36 from Pecos Street while traveling at speeds of 100 mph in a posted 65 mph zone.
According to the affidavit, detectives lost visual of the vehicle near U.S. 36 and Church Ranch Boulevard.
At 2:09 p.m., Colorado State Patrol troopers were dispatched to a two-car crash involving the stolen vehicle near the intersection of North 95th Street and Valmont Road. The driver of the stolen vehicle left the scene of the crash on foot, according to the affidavit.
According to Colorado State Patrol Trooper Sherri Mendez, the other driver was not injured in the crash.
While troopers were investigating the scene, Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies stated that they had detained a suspect, later identified as Escalera-Hernandez, at a nearby ranch.
When deputies asked if he was ever driving the stolen truck, Escalera-Hernandez said that his friend picked him up in the truck but was falling asleep so he took over driving.
He also stated that hi friend got the truck from another person but did not have any contact information for either of them.
At the time he was detained, Escalera-Hernandez had six warrants out for his arrest, according to the affidavit.
Specifically, he had two prior convictions of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle out of the Adams County Sheriff’s Office.
Responding agencies include CATPA Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force, Colorado State Patrol, Louisville Police Department and the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.
