Every mom loves flowers and plants and the 31st annual Royal Oak in Bloom, sponsored by the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, will have it all on Sunday.

The Mother’s Day event begins at 7 a.m. and runs until 2 p.m. With free parking on Sundays, the event is held in city parking lots located at 150 W. 6th Street (P3 Lot) and 163 6th Street (P7 Lot).

Heather Zeller, Director of Events & Communications for the chamber, notes there will be plenty of pampering for moms as well.

“Henry Ford Health does a Healthy Moms Corner,” Zeller said. “People can stop by their booth and they will be giving free mini massages to moms. They’ll have an acupuncturist and a massage therapist on site. People can ask questions from 8 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. That’s pretty fun. We also have Henry Ford-GoHealth Urgent Care. They’re giving away free sunflower plants to moms while supplies last.”

This annual flower and garden sale, held on Mother’s Day for the past 31 years, draws residents and visitors to downtown Royal Oak to shop for flowers, plants, landscaping items, and decorative elements for their lawns.

On-site vendors offer everything from perennials to copper sprinklers, annuals to trees, tomato plants to wind chimes and porch swings to etched stones. Designed to help Royal Oak homeowners beautify their property, Royal Oak in Bloom has become a Mother’s Day tradition for many.

The event is presented by Genisys Credit Union. Growers arrive in the early morning hours to unload semi-trucks full of hanging plants, vegetables, perennials, annuals and even small trees converting the parking lots to a garden show extravaganza with just about everything that can be grown in Michigan.

Local well-known and legendary farmers include Bill Stahl — who has been part of the event since its inception 31 years ago — Weig’s Greenhouse, Martin Farms, the Wenz Brothers, Gaier Farms, Gracia’s Greenhouse, and Uhlianuk Greenhouses. Each of these vendors has its own following, with regular shoppers returning annually to restock and add new selections to their gardens.

And it’s more than plants, anything and everything mom will need to spruce up the yard and garden can be found. Hummingbird feeders, wind chimes and more as lawn décor has become a popular addition to the event.

“Clover Stones will bring their unique creations and Creative Carvings by Tony Burroughs will be selling chainsaw carvings,” Zeller said.

There will be plenty of treats to keep mom’s shopping energy at a high-level. Detroit Black Coffee, The Little Donut Factory will be in attendance and Mystic Kettle will be popping and selling their gourmet flavored popcorn.

The chamber’s unique Plant Pick Up Service means you don’t have to walk around with all of those plants and garden goodies. Shoppers can “check” items and continue browsing, returning to claim their items.

“Shoppers are encouraged to bring along wagons to aid in transporting purchases to their cars. Tips are accepted and then donated to the Royal Oak Chamber high school scholarship fund,” Zeller said.
