The Mets made a surprising move with their first-round pick — No. 38 overall — taking two-way player Mitch Voit of Michigan.

Voit was on Baseball America’s board at No. 149.

Voit hit .350 with 14 home runs and 59 RBI his junior year while developing into a strong second baseman, earning a spot on the All-Big Ten defensive team. He also pitched his sophomore year in 2024 when he was 5-3, striking out 41 in 62.1 innings.

Voit, a Milwaukee native, had a .986 fielding average this season, helping turn 38 double plays while committing just four errors, leading former general manager and MLB Network analyst Dan O’Dowd to compare him with Gleyber Torres of the Detroit Tigers.

Dzierwa to Orioles

Left-handed pitcher Joseph Dzierwa of Michigan State was the next local player selected Sunday night. He went to the Baltimore Orioles, No. 58 overall, in the second round.

Dzierwa, 6-8 and 200 pounds, was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Year in 2025 after going 11-3 with a 1.42 ERA and .179 opponent batting average over 118 2/3 innings.

He was 22-9 in his three-year MSU career with 276 strikeouts and 65 walks.
