The Gary School Board has renamed the West Side High School auditorium in honor of its long-time theatre guild director, state Sen. Mark Spencer.
“He’s been an amazing leader in this city,” said board president Michael Suggs. “It’s been such a privilege to be entertained by his presentations that he’s made over the years.”
Spencer wasn’t present at the Thursday meeting because of his job in the state General Assembly in Indianapolis, where he represents Gary, Hobart, Lake Station, New Chicago and Merrillville.
Spencer filled out the unexpired term of Gary Mayor Eddie Melton and won election to the seat last year.
“I’m truly humbled by the honor of the auditorium renaming,” said Spencer in an interview.
Spencer estimated he’s produced close to 200 productions along with multiple school and community events. He founded the school’s theatre company nearly 30 years ago.
“The greater Gary and Northwest Indiana community, the school district, and especially our young people have given me so much,” said Spencer, who’s also a former Gary city councilman.
“The Emerson School VPA (Visual Performing Arts) and IUN shaped my calling, and the community took me under its wing. To God be the glory — and thanks to my mother, Betty, for paving the way.”
Spencer said a naming ceremony was being planned for a Lyrics presentation with Bernice King, the daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., on May 2.
