The Indiana Fever might be without star guard Caitlin Clark again for a bit after she injured her groin Tuesday night late in a win over the Connecticut Sun.
She was out for the team’s 98-77 loss to the Liberty in New York on Wednesday night and her status for WNBA All-Star weekend, which Indiana is hosting, is up in the air.
Clark is supposed to compete in a 3-point contest Friday night and is captain of one of the All-Star teams.
“No discussion yet about this weekend.” Indiana coach Stephanie White said. “There was imaging done, but there hasn’t been any discussion beyond tonight.”
White said that Clark’s management team will figure out whether she’ll be able to participate this weekend.
“For me, it’s a big deal for us to have All-Star in Indianapolis, and of course, with Caitlin being a focal point of all of that. As the coach of the Indiana Fever, it’s not a bigger deal than our long-term season, but it’s also part of the fun,” White said. “Those are conversations that Caitlin will have with her group. I probably won’t be a part of those, but we’re going to support her no matter what.”
The coach said that Clark had imaging done Wednesday and deferred to the team’s training staff for more details except to say that she considered it good news.
“For me, anything that we’re talking about that’s still day to day is always good news for me, but that’s a layman’s viewpoint,” she said.
Clark got hurt with less a minute left Tuesday against Connecticut. During a timeout, she covered her head with a towel and appeared to be holding back tears.
Breanna Stewart had 24 points, 11 rebounds and 7 assists to lift the Liberty.
Dream 86, Sky 49: Brittney Griner scored 15 points, Brionna Jones and Allisha Gray each added 14 points as Atlanta cruised at Chicago. Both teams were missing key starters. Chicago star Angel Reese missed her first game of the season with a leg injury and guard Ariel Atkins was out due to a calf injury. Dream forward Rhyne Howard will be out for the rest of July with a knee injury.
Storm 67, Valkyries 58: Nneka Ogwumike scored 22 points to move into sixth place on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list as the Storm won in Seattle. Ogwumike passed Candice Dupree (6,895 points) by a point and is behind Tamika Catchings (7,380).
Lynx 79, Mercury 66: Kayla McBride scored 18 points, Courtney Williams had 12 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists as Minnesota improved to 12-0 at home this season, heading into the All-Star break.
Aces 90, Wings 86: A’ja Wilson scored a season-high 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season for visiting Las Vegas.
NFL
Von Miller is signing with the Washington Commanders, with the NFL’s active sacks leader joining the team roughly a week before training camp opens.
Miller and the team agreed on a one-year contract, according to a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke to The AP on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been announced.
“DC... What’s good?” Miller posted on social media with an automated image of himself in a No. 24 Commanders unform.
The 36-year-old edge rusher felt like he still had more to give after getting released by Buffalo in a salary cap-saving move in March. Injuries derailed his time with the Bills, limiting him to 11, 12 and 13 games each of the past three seasons.
COLLEGES
The Mountain West Conference, in the process of going through a major membership transition, will “pause” adding new schools, Commissioner Gloria Nevarez said at the conference’s football media days.
The conference will add Grand Canyon in all sports except football beginning this year. Hawaii, which plays football in the Mountain West, will join as a full member in 2026, as will Texas-El Paso. Northern Illinois will play only football in the Mountain West and UC Davis will be a non-football member.
Five schools will leave the Mountain West for the Pac-12 Conference next year — Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State and Utah State.
The conferences are in a dispute about poaching fees and are headed back to court after failing to reach a deal.
MOTORSPORTS
Legacy Motor Club sued the broker who helped negotiate its purchase of a charter from Rick Ware Racing, accusing him of tortious interference for now trying to buy Ware’s NASCAR team.
Legacy alleged in its filing in North Carolina Superior Court that T.J. Puchyr, acting as a consultant for the Cup Series team owned by seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson, violated the state Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act by using “insider knowledge and position of trust to interfere with Legacy’s Agreement with RWR.”
Legacy also accused Puchyr of making public personal attacks against Johnson when he announced last month his plans to purchase Ware’s race team.
The dispute began not long after Legacy entered into agreement for Johnson and his partners at Knighthead Capital Management to purchase one of Ware’s two charters. Legacy says the deal is for next season, when it plans to expand to three full-time Cup cars.
RWR maintains the deal was for 2027 because it already is under contract with RFK Racing to lease that organization a charter next season. Ware says he didn’t read the contract closely when he signed it to note that it read 2026, and that honoring the RFK contract and selling a second charter to Legacy next year would put the NASCAR team out of business.
SOCCER
D.C. United has picked René Weiler to be its new coach.
The team announced that Weiler will take over once he receives a U.S. work permit. Weiler, 51, a native of Switzerland, served recently as coach and sporting director at Servette FC in the Swiss Super League. He’s also won the Belgian Pro League title and reached the Europa League quarterfinals with Anderlecht and guided Al Ahly to a Premier League championship in Egypt.
Kevin Flanagan will remain interim coach until Weiler arrives.
TENNIS
Genie Bouchard, 31, who reached the Wimbledon final and two other Grand Slam semifinals in 2014, is retiring from tennis.
The Canadian will play in the National Bank Open in Montreal this month before ending her career, Tennis Canada said.
