BERKELEY >> A person was arrested and two others were sought in connection with an assault Sunday at People’s Park that authorities were investigating as an anti-transgender hate crime.
According to limited statements and social-media posts, University of California police said officers responded just after 7:40 a.m. to the park in the 2500 block of Haste Street for a report of attempted aggravated arson and assault involving a baseball bat.
When police arrived at a construction site in the park, they found a victim suffering from injuries and took them to a hospital for treatment. Investigators found that three people attacked the victim with their feet and a shovel. One person was arrested a short time later; the other two people were not found at the scene.
Based on preliminary information, investigators said they believed the aggravated assault that took place was an anti-transgender hate crime, because of bias against the victim.
