Stagecrafters Youth Theatre presents “Sherlock Holmes,” telling the tales of of famed detective Holmes and Watson as they work to stop the famed Moriarty.
The show runs from Feb. 27 through March 2 at the Baldwin Theatre in Royal Oak.
Director Josh Gray is a natural fit for Stagecrafters Youth Theatre as he’s been performing since he was 5 years old.
“I took a few breaks here and there, explored lots of different things, but have always loved performing and storytelling,” he says. “When I was younger, I would put on shows for my family or friends — whoever I could get to watch, really.”
“Sherlock” is Gray’s second youth show, and he has also assistant directed some shows and directed short independent films. He’s been with Stagecrafters for about two years and says it’s a “great group to work with, and they keep letting me come back to be a part of the team.”
As for “Sherlock,” Gray says the youth cast is “phenomenal.”
“They’re so talented that it makes my job easy,” he adds. “But most importantly, they all put in the hard work of building their characters. It’s been so much fun to watch all of them grow and learn to make this story come to life on the stage.”
Gray was drawn to this particular show because he’s “always been a big fan of mystery stories.”
“Sherlock Holmes has always been one of my favorite detectives,” he said. “To have an opportunity to help bring this character to life on stage has been such a fun experience for me.”
The show has a good message for kids, too.
“This is a great tale of good triumphing over evil, through the powers of deduction and careful planning,” Gray says. “Throw in a bit of comic relief and some fun-filled personalities and this show is sure to entertain all who come to see it.”
Gray champions having Stagecrafters in Royal Oak because he says it gives locals a place to express themselves.
“Having the arts active in the community is always a great thing. Being able to have a place to express yourself, tell a story, uplift the masses is such an asset for everyone around,” he says. “If nothing else but to provide relief from the everyday stressors, having stagecrafters in the community gives that opportunity to everyone involved.”
