Johnny Risk, a man whose life was a testament to love, service, and adventure, passed away on December 19, 2024, just a stone’s throw from the San Gabriel Mountains he so dearly loved to explore.
Born on June 22, 1941, Johnny was the eldest of six siblings.
From a young age, Johnny had an affinity for planes, trains, and automobiles. He spent his childhood organizing tackle football games in local parks, igniting the camaraderie that he would later foster in others.
Throughout his life, Johnny was driven by a singular purpose: to serve others and make the world a better place. Whether it was mentoring youth at probation camps, guiding generations of boys toward becoming men of integrity as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 333, or offering his time to serve meals to those in need on Skid Row through the LA Catholic Worker, Johnny’s dedication to helping others was unwavering. He taught those around him not only to give their time but to do so with a heart full of compassion and a spirit of gratitude.
Johnny’s family and friends adored him for his caring, thoughtful nature and remarkable ability to make everyone feel seen and special. His sense of humor warmed hearts and evoked smiles. A dedicated runner, Johnny competed in countless races, including the legendary Boston Marathon. He was also a lover of nature, particularly the treasures he found on his many adventures.
Whether it was an interesting rock, a colorful leaf, or even a bundle of special twigs, Johnny shared his discoveries with others, sparking a sense of wonder and appreciation for the world around him.
Johnny is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Casey; his parents, John and Harriett; and his brothers Marshall and Stephen. He is survived by his children, Matt (Shelley), Liza (Jeff), Katie (Sean), and Tim; his cherished grandchildren, Cameron, Riley, Ryan, Kevin, Jack, and Elodie; and his siblings, David (Colleen), Nancy (Chuck), and Lois.
In honor of Johnny’s lifelong commitment to service, the family encourages donations to the LA Catholic Worker.
Johnny’s legacy is one of generosity, integrity, and joy—a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and touched the lives of all who knew him. A Funeral Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. on January 3rd at Holy Family Church in South Pasadena.
