It may not have been a lake, but the San Pedro harbor still proved a picturesque locale for the San Pedro Ballet to swim — or, rather, dance — to the music of Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Cabrillo Marina Berth 37 in the Port of Los Angeles, hosted the San Pedro Ballet on Friday and Saturday with the company performing “Swan Lake.”

Each show began around twilight and ended with the night sky fully dark; sunset receptions preceded the performances.

The 400-seat outdoor performance space on the waterfront and the timing of the shows provided an apt scene for watching “Swan Lake.”

The classic ballet, which debuted in 1877 in Moscow, is about the princess Odette and her companions who are turned into swans by a sorceress. They spend their days on a lake — before turning back into humans each evening.

The San Pedro Ballet is a popular, highly regarded nonprofit dance company established in 1994. It is the home company of American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland.
