To cap off Woodland’s Arbor Day events, dozens of residents did their part to help the city live up to its self-identified nickname as the ‘City of Trees’ by planning and executing an extensive community tree planting.
On Saturday morning from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., the Woodland community, along with dozens of members and volunteers from the city’s Urban Forestry Staff, Woodland Tree Foundation and West Coast Arborist aimed to plant 75 trees at Pioneer, Schneider and Klenhard Parks as a part of a weeklong Arbor Day celebration.
According to Westley Schroeder, the park’s superintendent for the city, Pioneer Park, located at 1925 Branigan Ave. had 42 new trees planted by the end of Saturday, along with another 12 at Klenhard park, located at 1771 East Gum Ave. Schneider Park, located on the west side of Woodland at 301 Mariposa St., was set for the remaining 21 trees.
“Planting 75 trees today is the goal, but we had a little less of a turnout than planned due to the rain,” Schroeder said. “We definitely will get all of them planted at some point, but maybe not all of them today.”
Schroder assured all of the trees planned for Pioneer and Klenhard Park will have been planted on Saturday.
Arbor Day is nationally recognized during the last week of April, but in each state, it’s different. In California, Arbor Day is a week-long event beginning on March 7 through March 14.
“We have some tree help from the city of Woodland and some staff from the water department that are helping out as well,” Schroder said. “The Tree Foundation and any other volunteers we get are always great to work with. Working with them and teaching new people how to correctly plant new trees is fun. The volunteerism in this city is just amazing.”
