Richard (“Dick”) Allen Hanretta was born on the 9th of June, 1945 in New York City to James Edward Hanretta and Anna Mickiewicz Hanretta. Raised in Lima, Peru and Upstate New York, he graduated from McLean High School in Northern Virginia in 1963. On the 5th of April, 1968 he and Patricia Lucille Smith were married in Denver, Colorado.

Dick received Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals for combat service in the US Army during the US-Vietnam War in 1968 and 1969.

For most of his life he lived in Colorado where he worked in the insurance industry, including jobs with Allstate, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency. He enjoyed playing and watching tennis, fishing, listening to music, and playing games. He was also an accomplished do-it-yourselfer. Dick dedicated much of his life to caring for his family. He had a quick wit and a gift for storytelling.

Richard passed away in Wilmette, Illinois on the 14th of October, 2023 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Patricia Hanretta, their children Sean Hanretta and Cory Fox and their spouses Kim Rapp-Hanretta and Matthew Fox, his sisters Theresa Hanretta and Barbara Atwell, and grandchildren Snow Fox and Caoimhe Hanretta. Services will be held at a future date at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver.
