Both Lake and Porter counties have seen an influx of voter registrations ahead of the Monday night deadline, officials said.
In Lake County, 1,397 people registered to vote from Friday to Sunday over the final weekend before the voter registration deadline, according to county data.
In Porter County, election office staff have processed almost 13,000 registrations since the primary, of which about 3,000 are new registrations, said Porter County Elections & Registration Director Sundae Schoon. Staff still had 600 registrations to process as of Monday afternoon and “loads of people are registering daily,” Schoon said.
Staff have been working hard, with some overtime, to process the voter registrations, said Lake County Board of Elections and Registration Director Michelle Fajman and Schoon.
Voters had until 11:59 p.m. Monday to register to vote either in person before election offices close, by mail or online at indianavoters.in.gov. All registrations filed before Monday night will be processed ahead of Election Day, Fajman said.
“Now is when you have to take action,” Fajman said. “If you want to have a voice in your government, you have to register to vote.”
