Police: Son discovers theft from father's home
A 97-year-old Westchester Township man told police two women he didn't know took cash and jewelry from his home, according to a police report.
Deputies with the Porter County Sheriff's Department were called shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday to the home in the 200 block of Dogwood Drive.
The man told police that around 4 p.m., he was home alone when someone knocked on the door and two white women entered the house and he began talking to one of them, the report said.
He described her as heavyset, about 40 years old, with neck-length blonde hair and brown eyes, a police report said. He told police he thought he was talking to both women but was unable to provide police a description of the other woman, documents said.
The man said the woman told him they came to see how he was, asking health-related questions like his other caregivers do, but he didn't recognize them, the report said.
The man also told police he wasn't expecting any caregivers when they arrived, the report said. The woman said, “We have to give Mrs. Johnson her medicine,” before the two women left, the report said.
The man said he wasn't aware that anything had happened at the home until his son returned and they discovered that three rings had been stolen from the son's upstairs bedroom, according to the police report.
The son told police he returned home from shopping and discovered his dresser drawers were ajar, and nearly $800 in cash was stolen from an envelope that had been on top of his dresser, the report said.
Three rings that were in a separate envelope also were taken, documents said.
